....before the end of WW2. According to the history channel the Japs built, and detonated a nuke in what is now North Korea, they just didn't have time to do anything with it. The Russians swooped in at the end and carted off everything they could get their mitts on and sent it back to the USSR. So between the Japs and the Krauts the end of the War was a squeaker.

Ya it’s something that they don’t teach in school even back when a lot of us were in, the thing that made them surrender is that according to what they found in their research and development it would take a couple of years to make another due to the difficulty of producing the materials to make each one, so when we dropped the second one it so shocked them they didn’t know what was happening or just how we had managed to produce 2 bombs or how many more we might have

I've read up on WWII a fair bit and this is the first I've ever heard of that.

I guess it doesn't make the Americans seem so outstanding if the Japs developed the bomb at the same time we did.

That Korea story is pure fiction. Shame on the "History" channel. Were they exploring the possibility of developing one, absolutely. Were they close or was there industrial base capable , not remotely.

Want to know the whole story from the beginning to the 1960's. Read "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" by Richard Rhodes. An actual factual account

Don’t know about the Korea story, but according to my dad who was there and because he was fluent in Japanese was often called on to act as a translator and was present when many scientists and military technicians were questioned or shared talk with others that were, they were real close to developing their own nuclear bomb they had the mathematics and technical details and understanding to do so but their estimates were that refining the materials would take at a minimum a year to produce enough for a single bomb, so when the second was dropped it came as an even greater shock then the first

Several years ago I remember watching a series on super weapons and one of the episodes was about the various weapons that Japan had in development at the end of the war, that they never got to use and they interviewed several Japanese scientists and engineers that had worked on some of the projects that Japan had in progress as well as various historians and they went over japans nuclear program and pretty much confirmed what my dad had said, their conclusions were that Japan was only months at most away from developing their own nuclear bomb

The real bottle neck to Japan developing their own bomb was lack of access to uranium, the nazis were supposed to send them some but the sub that was delivering 1200 pounds of it was captured by the US navy, when they boarded it the 2 Japanese officers aboard committed suicide and the uranium aboard actually ended up in American bombs

A good book about the Japanese efforts to build a bomb is Japan’s Race Against Time to Build Its Own Atomic Bomb.” by Robert Wilcox

The Japanese destroyed tens of thousands of documents and equipment to keep it out of American hands but some of it survived enough to show they could have made their own bomb but for access to materials and if they had you can bet they would have used it

Well... there's a big difference between knowing how something should work and having the ability to actually make it work.

true but looking at what they had and what they knew it was only a matter of time before they figured out what else they needed if anything to make it work, the only real thing holding them back was their lack of access to fissionable materials otherwise they were as advanced as we were t the time

It was absolutely a race to prove who could hit who first

we won the race

we had put huge resources into long range strike capability from carriers and island bases

Many thousands of our Marines and Navy Died to make striking distance possible and repeatable.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

The whole Pacific theater was about resources. Japan was tapped out in the 20's and 30's and couldn't grow their economy or military any longer. Then we (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) them off when we stopped sending our oil over there. By '44 they were being strangled resource wise, so even if they were able to figure out the bomb they wouldn't be able to produce them.

An actual AMERICAN account! The krauts were a whisker away from the bomb, and they had a rocket system to deliver it. They were supposed to deliver fissionable material to the japs, but the sub that was carrying it got captured, and the Uranium went to the US, where WE used it.

Are you sure of this. Seems this news should have surfaced sooner. Good story.

Yeah, I've been reading about WWII for 50 years and this the first that I've heard that the Japanese "were close". Maybe they were, doubtful it would have changed things because......

By late July, 1945, we had been systematically firebombing the main Japanese cities killing hundreds of thousands of their people. They had broken up industry into a many house-based "you do this step" in war production so the decision was made to take out cities, more or less. That campaign, using B-29s in low altitude bombing runs dropping magnesium bomb-lets, started with the "Meeting House" raid on Tokyo March 9 (100,000 dead in that raid). In the almost 5 months before August 6, the Japanese had come up with no way to counter these attacks.

Also by late July 1945, the U.S. submarine fleet had effectively cut off Japan from receiving any large scale supplies, especially food. Japan basically couldn't feed itself so probably slow starvation was on its way. The Japanese had no capability at that point to stop the American submarines.

By the end of July, Emperor Hirohito wanted a way out to end the war to stop the killing but politically he was unable to stop the war party (Tojo had been replaced as prime minister already). The 2 American atomic bombings on August 6 and August 9 (Nagasaki that day was actually the secondary target, I forget the primary target but the A-bomb B-29 crews were under strict orders that the bombing aim point had to be clearly seen and it wasn't, so bad news for Nagasaki). This new development gave Hirohito an "out".

Between August 9 and August 14/15, Hirohito put out peace feelers to the Americans so basically the last two weeks of August was sort of truce situation before the official surrender happened on Sept 2 in Tokyo Bay on board the USS Missouri (remember Truman was from Missouri). Even during that mid-August time period, various war party officials were attackers/killing multiple people Hirohito had trying to work out the surrender deal. A smaller military coup against him failed. Hirohito was generally a weak leader during the time period 1931 through 1945 but he grew enough of a pair to make his military stop the war by the end of August. He knew they were beat, why keep the killing happening...

A dated but good book on that month is The Fall of Japan (1967) by William Craig. Google the title and his last name, and lots of used copies are available so its still widely read today. I read it the first time in the late 1970s... https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26834513-the-fall-of-japan
