My bet is on pick up coil. New cap coil and rotor, I bet she runs again.

This is the first issue that's left me on the side of the road that I couldn't come up with a fix for; granted I didn't have much time or daylight to tinker around with it last night. Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions everyone! I'll try a couple of the quicker things maybe this evening, like tapping the tank with a rubber mallet and testing plugs, maybe try a shot of ether with lubricity in the air cleaner. I'll report back what I find out!

Fuel or spark if going down the road and just died.

Rule out battery/alternator if there's wasn't a noticeable dimming of lights prior to shut off and it will still turn over.

Gas, you should hear the pump kick on. You can also check to see if the lines are pressurized at the schrader valve on the fuel rail. Careful if the engine is hot.

If not fuel then you're looking at spark. Either at the distributor to the plug wires or out of time due to a jumped belt.

Icm or coil would be my first guess. Check spark on the easiest plug to pull.

Since giving opinions are free. My guess is fuel pump.

I had a '79 Ford pickup that would just suddenly die. Wait a bit and it would restart. Finally chased it down to the computer. When it got hot it would just cut off and the truck died.

Check the fuel filter underneath the cab along the inside of frame, could be plugged. Happened to my 89 GMC.

If you left your vehicle here along the road for the night you would have the gas stolen by a hole drilled in the gas tank and the catalytic converter removed!

Start with the basics. Check for spark, if it's got spark squirt some carb cleaner in and see if it'll start. If it starts, you have a fuel delivery issue and go from there.

Don't waste your money throwing parts at it hoping it'll fix it, take the time to diag it and replace what it needs.

Check the fuel pump fuse and wiring before pulling the pump. 7-8 yr old pump, rebuild or new? Quality of replacement parts can be crap these days, Made in China?

I'll maybe have time to look at fuses tonight. Fuel pump was new when I replaced it 7-8 years ago. I don't remember where it was made. Likely bought off RockAuto or LMC Truck.

I cant remember for sure, but chevy changed from a quadrajet carburater to a throttle body injector in 86 or 87. One thing I can tell you for sure, There was no timing belt on any chevys back then, and if it isn't a throttle body, it won't have a pump in the tank. Just saying!

It's a throttle body. First year for the throttle body and last year of the squarebody style.

First thing I'd try is unplugging the coolant temp. sensor on the intake manifold. If it's bad it will keep it from starting when warm. It will start cold. If it starts cold , then dies , try it .

My vote is the fuel pump, i have changed many of them. Made a hole in the bed, I have a bed liner over it so that is not a problem. Could be electric but pump is my first choice wiht what we are given.......jk
