fuel pump or a short in the trailer lights "pig tail" How could a short in the trailer lights cause the engine to fail to start?

Start with the basics. Check for spark, if it's got spark squirt some carb cleaner in and see if it'll start. If it starts, you have a fuel delivery issue and go from there.
Don't waste your money throwing parts at it hoping it'll fix it, take the time to diag it and replace what it needs. Take this advice, it could be as simple as a electronic control module or coil, this would be my guess since it was running fine before quitting and then nothing.

BTW I had a in tank fuel pump replaced and 3 days later again. It was a NAPA pump. Went to dealer and bought one and that was 9 or 10 years ago. 1999 GMC 3/4 4wd.

Like mindless said, My 87 chevy died one night going down the road, no lights, everything went out, went to junk yard and had to buy the hole distributor, just to get the module out, MAKE SURE TO PUT DIELECTRIC ON THE UNDERSIDE. plastic top & metal bottom.

My bet is timing belt…had this happen to a 1991 ford escort. I've had two timing belts go out , the vehicles just quits. Best to not turn over, it happens without warning no sputter just dead.

fuel pump or a short in the trailer lights "pig tail" How could a short in the trailer lights cause the engine to fail to start? All I can tell ye is that it happened to me on a 72 chevrolet pickup and also with a 86 Ford Ranger. The wiring was peeled and touching the back bumper and when I hit a rough spot it would kill the engine deader than a mackeral.

Check it for spark .... If none, look at the HEI coil, wires fatigue over time. If has spark, fuel filter or pump.

Electronic control module.
So, what is it? Haven't gotten around to looking at it yet. Had a busy weekend with a shooting match and family pictures. This week is packing and getting ready for a week-long trip to Glacier National Park. Will get to dive into it the week of the 22nd.

I should add - the pickup died last week, Thursday night. My father-in-law and I headed out to pull it the 10 or so miles home last Friday evening. When we got to the pickup, I was able to start it up (heard the fuel pump kick in), and drive it about 8 or so miles before it died on me, just as it did to my wife. We pulled it the last couple of miles home. Turning the key to ACC, I heard the fuel pump kick in once. Turning the key off and back to ACC, the fuel pump did not kick in the second or third times. Will be digging more into it later this month.
On a side note, my wife's Traverse check engine light came on the other day. Stopped in to O'Reileys and had them scan it. P0496 I believe it was....evap. purge solenoid valve. $90 for the part and a socket set, and five minutes of my time seems to have fixed that issue. Sure is nice when they're that easy!

Replaced the fuel filter last night. Let it run in the driveway for a bit. It eventually idled down and died. Going to look into the fuel pump relay one of these nights. Will give her a fresh oil change tonight.

87 Chevy was still throttle body , put some gas , just and ounce or so not from the can but from small bottle down the intake back away and fire it up if it starts you have spark no fuel
my 86 f150 multi port fuel injected died abruptly , it had spark no fuel , but I had fuel pressure , finally found it the ground wire to the injectors had come un plugged put that ply back together and black taped it so it never cam undone again
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
