Lot of ag in my county…Dove has become my new small game of choice. We have an early season and a late season and tend to hold plenty of birds. I’ll even give up deer hunting for a shoot. Was able to attend several last year before work, lol.

Grew up hunting squirrel, cottontails and bob whites in Missouri. Left there about 30 years ago. Squirrel hunting is the thing I miss the most. Go back there rarely but try to schedule the trips during the fall to hunt squirrels after the ticks are done.

I sure enjoy chasing ditch chickens

also got a good place for rabbits once Ditch chicken is closed

brush piles make a rabbit spot gut fire wood and leave nice brush piles for the rabbit habitat

we went from hardly a track at the farm to plenty to go shaking brush piles and shooting rabbits

the only thing that changed was the brush piles for habitat

I leave habit but once I started trapping the farm rabbit population went up a ton. Enough we actually hunt them a few time a year now when it snows.

Grouse is my favourite small game animal to hunt. Lots of ruffed grouse here! Sharptails are starting to explode, and Spruce grouse are here and there.

I don't know if gophers count but I really enjoy shooting those. Unfortunately it's a 6 hr drive to gopher patch. I also enjoy shooting starlings, crows and magpies. Hunted a white magpie for a month before I got him. He was a shifty bugger.

trapping may have played a role also , I suppose raccoon will eat rabbit kits ?
I haven't taken any coyote off the farm but there is a group that runs dogs for coyote and can cross the farm as long as they stay away from the cattle on winter pasture north of the road. which works because they mostly want the creek and woods south of the farm but have permission to cross south pastures and fields as needed
only thing north of the road is 80 acres with farm buildings and winter pastures

the sheep dogs may also play a part they didn't have those when I started cutting wood and trapping great pyranies mix

Squirrel. I'd rather hunt squirrel than deer.
And, they're easier to carry out of the woods and clean.

Squirrel! I got my first Mtn. Feist a few years back and another after that now looking to get rid of a few pups after The Boy let them out together lol. It's a whole new experience hunting with a couple good dogs for those sneaky greys, gets the blood moving when they open up on a tree. The male will follow them when they timber tree to tree and the female being younger pretty much stays where they left the ground but she was getting better before she got knocked up. I have high hopes for this fall!!!

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

Blue grouse in the huckleberry brush. Spruce grouse are second.

Woodcock hunting with my grandpa’s old single shot shot gun. I try and make a couple of hunts, a year.

How do you make squirrel edible. Ate one once as a kid and thought I was going to have to like my hind end to get the taste out of my mouth. We have red and grey squirrels here where I live in North Dakota. Is there a difference in edibility?
