I hate to say it but you have that wrong. The square jaw has a 5 1/4 spread, measured it last night

Thats an odd ball then because when we redid the ohio rules, they nade sure to make that trap illegal on land because its 5.5" inside spread. You can shrink the jaw spread by bending the jaw tips up.

My calipers measure them at 5.45 inside with jaw tips turned up.

They few that I have are bent at a hard 45-50 degree bend. Is that really enough to cheat 1/4 inch out of the spread? Or is it safe to say they’re not the original jaws?

Maybe an 1/8 could be pulled down. Could be that someone swapped jaws,. Old days people mixed an matched a lot of traps.

I owe you an apology, I checked the measurements on all the #2 victors I have and they all varied from 5 1/4 to 5 3/8. I straightened the jaws out, bent the tips back down, alligned the pans and straightened out the levers and they got a little better. I tried with another tape measurer and now they’re all relatively close to 5 1/2. Seems between the jaws and a bad tape my measurement was off. Certain things you can get from harbor freight, tape isn’t one of them. Milwaukee wins again

Its a sad day when you cant trust your ruler.

Jaws are so thin on those vic 2s that if they've seen any use at all... Indint think any of mine the jaws are straight anymore.

They are still off a little bit, between 5 5/16 and 5 7/16 so I’m not sure how to get them any better and I even started at 1 inch on the tape to make sure that there’s no play in the metal clip on the tape. I don’t think I’m going to be able to straighten the jaws out any better so I’m just going to lam them.

My idea for making them a good usable trap...
In the same spirit as modifying #3 jumps to save them from the scrap
heap, I was thinking of the #2 Victor square jawed coils. These traps
were once popular with fox trappers but now that coyotes inhabit much
more of the country people are finding that the #2 SJ is no longer a viable
option. These traps sell very cheaply and most claim they are no good
for coon unless they are on drowners, and we all know drowners aren’t
for everyone or every situation. So they are destined to be mink traps
where there are no coon or scrapped altogether. So I was thinking of a
way to make them into good traps without putting more money into them
than they are worth. I think I’ve come up with a winner of a coon trap.
The problem is the excess room under the jaws where coons can easily
chew on the bottom of their foot, eventually making it very easy to pull
out of the trap. The solution is to limit that area, cheaply.

Here’s how I decided to do it. First I built this jig. The thin piece is a 1¾“
long piece of 1½“ wide x ¼“ flat stock. The thicker pieces are ½” square
stock 2” long….

[Linked Image]

I clamped the jigs long side in the trap jaws, and then clamp it in the vice.
This provides the perfect place for lying your ¼” rod across to be sure it
straight. Then simply weld the ends of the rod and you’re done…

[Linked Image]

The look from the side. (No chew outs now!)…

[Linked Image]

The set trap…

[Linked Image]

Now I realize my welds aren’t real pretty but I’m out of practice. A couple
tips though you can only put the chew stopping bars across so low or they
interfere with the pan when setting the trap. This method will work on
B&L and Herters #2 SJ as well I do believe. Also I think it is very
important to have really strong springs and extra swivels in the chain.

The best part is it costs less than $.10 per trap and you can set them
anywhere for coon and mink with no worries. Sure you can add $5
worth of mods and use them for coyotes but for less than a dime they'll
make good coon/mink/rat traps.

I like that mod, thanks ADC. I only have 1 of these traps, and have been trying to find a use for it...I think you made my decision! My only other thought was to beef it a little bit for bobcats.

Glad to help.

I felt bad disagreeing with TCAP on another post, so I hope this helps make up for it a little. smile
