I’ve probably asked this before but for those of you that grow feeder pigs what do you feed them? A complete feed or some kind of ration?

Last few batches I had a source of FREE, premium, out of date dog food.
Probably fed 75% that, balance commercial feed from local Amish mill

Supplemented with kitchen scraps, beaver carcasses, etc.

Feed is CRAZY expensive now and my free source of dog food dried up.
So haven't raised any for a couple years.

18% until 60-70 pounds and then finish them out on 13-15%, whichever your elevator carries. Worm them at least twice along the way, whether you think they need it or not. Feed them all the tablescraps you can along the way...and probably going to have plenty of garden scraps this time of year as well.

We used to get discarded chips from a potato chip plant but now all that as to be thrown away and is wasted. I normally feed a 16% protein mix from our local mill. I’ll also feed any scraps I can get. Pigs can eat and do good on many different things. Was able to get a bunch of expired cereal for this batch of pigs.

First instinct for me is to say you can't feed a pig wrong, they know what they need. Which may be true but they have to have access to it. If one has corn and no way to grind and mix it you could just feed corn and give the access to free choice 40% pellets. And you could just limit them to so much a day if they are pigging out on the pellets.

I used to give runts to an old guy that would keep them on the ground and feed them all types of garden and table scraps. He would keep a batch of corn fermenting a day or two ahead all the time (plastic buckets better than metal). Those pigs would start squawking any time they saw him coming their way. I always kidded him about his bunch of drunks. He told me he would rather deal with a drunk pig anytime over a drunk human. He told me a story about a falling down drunk guy that fell in a ditch with a pig and the pig got up and moved, wasn't even good company for a pig, lol. That old guy could sure make a runt pig grow.

Fermenting any grain raises the protein, but pigs need a balance of amino acids to do well. For lighter hogs the most important amino acid is lysine. Soybean meal fills most of their requirements, but don't make the mistake of thinking you can just feed them ground soybeans with the corn. Soybeans must be cooked or roasted for growing hogs, one might get by on sows tho.
Another thing I would stay away from is anything moldy

Hogs are bred to be lean now and not everyone likes that if they are making their own sausage or lard. A fatter diet might help in that case.

We used to cook for our hogs corn , beans , milo , slop ,and fish dressings from commercial fishing any and all road kill.we cooked in two tanks . This gave the cookings time to sour before feeding . We also turned feeders out into standing corn or milo at times .
Back in the 50s or 60s the government was pushing a business plan that involved four paddocks planted in several different crop mixes that feeder pigs were rotated through as the crops matured .

My grandad used to pasture them on alfalfa, but that was in the 60s

Dave P I’ve heard of lots of guys getting ahold of out of date products to feed pigs, that would be nice especially if free

Midlander that’s probably what I’m going to end up doing. I work at a feed mill, unfortunately we don’t get any kind of discount but we carry feed for all the different life stages. Will also be feeding garden scraps

Farmerdan maybe I need to be doing more checking on expired goods

Foxpaw I think drunk pigs would only add to the entertainment on my farm.

Thanks everyone for there advice I went and picked up 7 Last night. Here’s a pic my wife took of my daughter with one

Big foot that’s an interesting concept with the four paddocks and different crops

Yukon John that’s a new one on me, we’ve got a little alfalfa but I don’t think I want to turn the pigs out on it

Thanks Tyler I don’t have any woods pasture but I think that’s the best route with just using my available feed and tossing in some scraps

52 Carl I did you just build you a little pen get you some bacon seeds water and feed em and 6 months later bacon!

In the fall if you can find some, hogs love pumpkins.

When I was a kid, we raised hogs, cattle and crops........but it was the hogs that paid the bills. Most were fed out on pastures. My dad used to say they smelled like money.

Before they were weaned, pigs had access to starter pellets in a creep feeder. After weaning, free choice access to either commercial feed, or feed we ground ourselves, but it was always a balanced ration. Anything else they got was supplemental.

As an aside, to a 12 year old kid tasked with moving a ton of feed, a Gehl mix-all was a blessing sent from on high. It replaced a scoop shovel.

BTW, when it comes to breeds, you see a lot of noise from the foo foo crowd about Durocs or Berkshires........trying to market them like Angus cattle.

Ours were a 3 way cross between a Yorkshire and Spotted Poland gilt, and Duroc boar. We sold our hogs at the KC stockyards........and almost always........ours were preferred by the buyers and set the market top for the day. If you are raising them to eat em, steer clear of the purebreds.

As for other supplemental feed, my grandmother was friends with a girl whose family got pretty wealthy raising hogs. Wasn't common knowledge at the time, but apparently they got paid a lot of money by the mob in KC to dispose of deados.

Yes hogs will eat just about anything.

Gary that pig looks like it’s trying to stay cool!

Hay day my grandpa and uncles raised hogs on the farm I now own until about 94 or 95. We had a mix mill set up and he would grind corn and other rations into an auger wagon and then take that to the feeders. I was born in 90 so I can just barely remember the pigs.

These pigs are a duroc cross

Gary I am betting those pigs are going to get a few baths this week. Untill my kids got into 4 h I never dreamed of washing chickens, clipping goats, or tattooing rabbits and goats. I never thought I would like 4 h so much either.

Had a buddy that worked at a high end mens clothing store his senior year in high school. They worked basically off commission. Well one day and older gentleman came in with muddy boots, jeans, and a muddy button up shirt. No one wanted anything to do with him because he “smelled” of muck. My buddy, being the outdoorsman, said I’ll take care of him.
He said he spent almost 45min with this guy just talking and selling him clothes. In their talking the guy mentioned he was a pig farmer. My buddy asked how many hogs he had and he said about 33-34. My buddy, asked 3300-3400 and he said no, 33,000-34,000.
That joker spent $3000 on clothes that day.
Apparently pig farmers are making some pork!! And that was 1986!
