Temp dropped into the low 60s overnight so off to the woods chasing squirrels we went. Myself, my daughter and my brother. Got in place about 6, but the first squirrel didnt show itself till 6:40, by 8:30 I had three and my brother had his limit, couldnt get them to sit still long enough for my daughter to get a shot. Now they are in the crock pot with onions, garlic, and assorted seasonings, and will either be pulled bbq type sandwiches or thrown in with some dumplins. Love a good cool morning in the woods. Been pouring it on them here.
They’re hammering the hickory nuts.
Killed 10 out of 1 tree Thursday morning.

Our hickory nuts must be running late this year. I was sitting in the middle of bunch of hickories, and only saw a few sampled nuts on the ground and heard no cutting. One of my brothers squirrels came out of a stand of maple trees. If we get weekends like this temp again I will be back at them.

Making into bbq sandwiches is my favorite. Never have been a fan of frying them, they always end up tougher than the sole of my work boots.

fry them up good and crispy and brown then put them in a pressure cooker. Tough squirrel will just be a thing of the past

sounds like fun.

some #6 for the kids in a 410 or 20ga helps them get tree rats

it takes experience to get fast and precise on a rifle

the shotgun lets them score and build confidence while they work on their rifle skills

targets that move when they shoot them , we used 2 soup cans on in the other with a wrap of duct tape as they held together longer when we were kids these days ranges aren't maybe so cool about that
something like this is safe and lasts a while when used with round nose ammo
https://byallen.com/ez-aim-prairie-dog-throwable-target-15453
they flip over when hit so the can walk it down the range having fun and getting better at making quick hits

shooting balls and such they go flying real fast
these also move a little when they flip so they have to re-acquire the target simulating a squirrel that just ran a few feet and stopped again

Thats probably the route I will take next time out. I have access to a youth model 870 20 gauge which she has already shot a few times.

We used to soak them in milk overnight before frying. Made them as tender as chicken. Now we put them in the instant pot and make squirrel and gravy with sourdough biscuits.

Every squirrel around here have bott worms, most have many more than one. Ugly looking sores on the squirrels, not an animal you would want to eat.

Have not ever seen one with one of those on it before, but am sure I will run across one with some of those nasty little buggers in them at some point.

T-Man should have a thumbs up button for post like this. That squirrel looks really good. I don't hunt them now like I did when I was younger. I do try to get out at least once each fall with my son so can do one meal.

I’m going to try that this fall. How’d they turn out, any morning pics?

Nobody was hungry when they came out of the crock pot. So I pulled the meat off the bone and its in the fridge so should be supper tonight. Will try and post pictures this evening if I remember.

yup every kid needs a shotgun
my son bought his at 10 split a bunch of wood and other chores to pay for that shotgun. now that he is an adult he still has it , he added stock spacers so that it still fits him so light and easy to shoot he took a few pheasant with it last year , a dream to carry

I like the 500C 20ga as come drilled and tapped , they still have the full lenght mag tube just a smaller stock and the safety is on top so if one kid is right handed and the next left no issue
if the mag tube is the standard lenght then the regular barrels can be found for them

son found a slug barrel for his recently and has it set up for a slug township we hunt now

I liked his so much when I saw a combo 500c 20ga with slug and bird barrel I bought it mine has been set up as a slug gun for a while

the barrel he found has the cantilever barrel so he can go back and forth without re-zeroing 3 dollar a round slugs
