Boco, is 6 months long enough to properly dry cabin logs?

Paint the interior white, it will really brighten things up on long evenings when you have projects to work on.

You can see in Tatiana first picture what happens to logs as they dry and the walls slump by the lean-to's backward slope to the cabin. Thanks for posting your tagia surroundings

14 acres is not much to select your trees from.

Build it square and build it tight and then 60 years of mouse proofing pays off in the end..

What a place, is the Vasyugan Mire. I never realized such diversity of clays, soils, peat, and , what the southerners call floating islands , in the glades . Along with streams, rivers , above and below ground. And oil deposits. In such a vast amount of land. The link mentioned marten in that swamp . I didn't like reading of the ticks, however .

No wonder cabins built in the wrong place are no doubt a learning experience for the builder.

It would be fascinating to see photos of that swamp and its different features.

Thank you for sharing the link, Tatiana.

Sort of hijacking this thread, but I started searching around for information on the Vasyugan Swamp; Wow just amazing, a swamp bigger than Switzerland. It sounds like it's full of fur.

12x16 is too small. We have one that size. The small wood stove can roast us. Yes, we heat with wood and know how to regulate a fire. Need safety space or combustion is possible. We always say THIS IS TOO SMALL. Then we use it and make do.

You need room around the wood stove. You need room to cook, eat, store food, store some clothing, dry clothing, sleep, wash yourself, relax reading or something, store gear and supplies, etc. On top of all that skin some stinky critters. That size is way too quickly full and crowded.

I agree that 12'×16' is minimal, and should have added that it is adequate for 2, at most, other than short stays for more.
And I agree that 16'×24' would be close to ideal, if all things allow for it.

Just doing what I want now.

Sounds like we're going to be neighbors. Mine is 24'x30'. Lots of room but a lot of work for one guy. I would definitely build smaller if I were ever to do it again.

Tatiana…Super cool information on the Vasyugan Mire, I had no idea that existed. Thanks for sharing the info on that and some of the structures that have been built. Are those cabins that you had a hand in building yourself?

Nof50…Tight and square is the plan. I’m sure I’ll figure out better ways along the way. And I get that 14 acres isn’t much, but I’m not looking to build a large cabin. And I have to go see what the property has to offer still before I close on it. And it may just be more suited to buying materials. We will soon see. I do have a few ideas I’m kicking around.

Posco…Neighbors, great! I may be touching base with you soon via PM if you don’t mind? I could use some local knowledge up in the area. I don’t want to get up there and step on anybody’s toes. Nice cabin build too, thanks for the pics!

Steve

Regardless of size make it as wide now as you want it in the end it is much easier to add on length then width especially when the roof comes into play. Like White 17 said I would build in 8 foot increments my trap shed is 12X20 and I know if the Fish boss ever kicks me out it will make a nice cabin

Thanks for the input Otterman...I'll keep the length/width thing in mind for sure.

Heading up to check out the property next weekend. Can't wait to see what I have to work with. If all goes well with the inspection I should be closing on it a few days later. Getting pretty excited!!

Or I can just tote some supplies up there from my home here in Pennsylvania, a wee bit at a time.

Absolutely will be insulated. I do love wood stoves, but you're right Wag...My time may be better suited doing more fun things. I will definitely look into the Nordic stove some more.

The sauna...hmmmmm, now that's interesting. Maybe after we get settled into the property that will be something to look at more.

Great stuff...keep it coming!

Steve

I'm a half hour from the Lowe's in P.I. I bought my shed from the Amish shed shop in Easton. You might want to check them out. If I remember right my 12x20 shell was about $4,000 delivered and set up. It is the shed behind the cat.

Another side note, If you are off grid I'd get a propane generator, propane refrigerator, propane stove & propane heater. You can probably get delivery on your site. I would also have a small wood heater. I was off-grid up there for three years then I bought a cabin with running water & electricity.

Maybe I mentioned this earlier, but look into "Nordic Oil Stoves" for heat (you can also place a kettle on top of them). They are a very efficient oil heater that does not require electricity to operate. much less space than a wood stove, no firewood to cut, etc.. Probably more cost effective than wood if your time is worth anything; plus very convenient.

Thanks for the info EB...I had been kicking the idea of a pre-fab shell around as well. I may run with this option and build a smaller fur shed out building with the trees on the property. That seems to be a pretty reasonable price tag they have on those and it still leaves room for tweaking it a wee bit.

I was going to upload some pics, but I can't seem to get them to work properly?

Other than this one... [Linked Image]

Thanks Wags...I do plan to look into the Nordic Stoves still. I want to settle on the build first though.
