Indiana Squirrel season opener. My boys are stoked yet quiet. They got in trouble a few days ago and don't think I'm going to take them. I probably shouldn't but I'm going to.

They did all their chores and quit a bit more today my wife said.

To be honest it's more of a punishment for me if I don't get to take them.than it is for them. I need.theime I'm the woods washing them hone their skills in order to keep my sanity while I'm away working long days. Hunting, fishing, trapping, shooting, with the kids is what I live for.

I thought you're not supposed to hunt/eat small gane in months with an R in its name.

There’s a rule of thumb to only harvest shellfish in months that end in R. 4 of the 6 months of small game season end in R. Think you got it mixed up a bit.

You typically want to wait a couple of weeks until after the first few frost to kill off fleas, live, ticks and mites. But that’s more so for rabbits and squirrels not all small game.

So far we have only got a sighting of a few. Bobc as to must really smell my youngest saw one 15 yards away watching him before it took off all the way down this rock creek bed I keep smelling a very strong smell like a rad with fox pee is following me around.

I didnt know there was any danger eating squirrels in the fall. Thought it was rabbits, as they may carry a disease that kills them after it is cold. I wish the first frost killed off fleas!!

Good luck with the boys!
Hunting for squirrels is fun and a good way to get some early fresh meat.
Hopefully you can post some pics

I always heard to only harvest watercress in months that have the letter r in them.

I think you were trying to say months without an R in them are no-go for small game

not really true IL MO IN and a few others further south than WI all open squirrel in August

anything can be ok to eat at any time you just get fewer flies and such after a few frosts

my Aunt down in the South east says no shell fish or shrimp unless the month has an R in it so September to April well I sure as heck wasn't going to visit South GA in July or August

Everyone worries about warbles in early squirrels. Ive always hunted squirrels in September, and August when the season came in then and in 23ish years ive had ONE squirrel with a warble.

I think we are going to get skunked today.. the few we have seen have been spread out in the tops and not sticking around long. It's warming up quick and I expect then to quit moving.

Probably does not help the boys wanted to hut a woods they shot 32 out of last year.

That's why they call it hunting and not gathering.

got to leave squirrel seeds and give them time to re-group

we shot half the rabbits we saw in a woods that didn't used to have any , when we started cutting fire wood , brush piles helped

we wanted to make sure to leave , seed for next year get one good hunt in each year at that farm
