We lost power for 9 days back around 2009 because of an ice storm. With our food and fuel supplies we did alright. It wasn't too bad, but if we'd run out of gas for the generator it would have been.
I've only got 5Kw generator We couldn't power the whole house at once so we had to "cycle" through the loads, water pump for the well, heater, it's gas but of course the blower is electric, refrigerator. We did our cooking on a propane camping stove and used one of the Mr buddy heaters to augment our regular heater. Coleman lanterns put off a good amount of heat, as well as CO.
One "cool" thing was with the local grid down it was "electrically quiet" letting AM/FM and amateur radios work real well.

These thoughts bring to my mind the movie Water World....a Costner production.
Michael , you may find that one interesting, as the whole thing is played out on the ocean. I found "The Postman" to be closer to how I imagine things will play out.

"what if" food supply lines were being interrupted "what if" food processing factories & farming were being purposely interrupted "what if" this winter store food shelves were emptier "what if" can be reality
Prep stuff that will last like canned goods, crackers, water, beans, rice, etc If "nothing happens" you can always use it in the future If you live in a city you'll be screwed. A supply of propane, firewood, ammo, drygoods, alternative lighting perhaps (propane lights). Old timey things like running your flowing well through a morticed stone flow house for some goods near the cold water supply is good. Root cellar and enough solar array to handle a freezer or a regrigerator...

We saw short supplies, closures, and stay at home situations two years ago. Busiest jobs in town were hospital employees and undertakers.
I worry mostly about the power supply. This will sound horrible, but in a real SHTF scenario that would be a good thing. If things get REAL bad, 80-95% of US population will die. We're discussing how to be the 10% that doesn't.

If it comes down to it... people will have to make decisions if they haven't yet. I already have.
If I was 25-30 years old with 1-10 children depending on me, I would stay where I could, when I could, and then move on if I felt that was needed to protect my children.
But I'm on the far side of 40, my husband is older, and we have no children living with us so I'm not going anywhere. Will I die defending this piece of land? Likely, at some point.
There's no way a young person looking at the future and someone who feels they've lived their life could look at this situation the same.

Michael , you may find that one interesting, as the whole thing is played out on the ocean. Ohh I have a couple of DVD's or three with that one on them. The marina folks called my setup waterworld and it sort of stuck with us You're the guy with the tricked out sail boat , the part Costner played . I can see you inventing something like that . It was only with a community armed and cooperating that they stayed alive in that chaos.
