Do any of you do or know much about carving bears out of wood? I assume white pine is the preferred wood. Feel free to share some of your work on this thread. I don't plan on getting into carving but I have some white pine that I think would work well for carver's and I'm just curious the sizes of wood that chainsaw carvers look for. Some of those bears I've seen.. the talent is unreal. It's kind of a neat hobby. Once the tree is cut down I would imagine the Carvers want the wood fairly fast, then again maybe they want it to dry, I don't know..

Not much into carving wood, but here is one in mammoth ivory.

I have a brother and a brother inlaw that carve eagles and bears. They do small door step bears out of 12-15 in. and have carved bears for me out of 40 in. stuff.

I have a standing 6 foot black bear on my porch near the door.
We have some other carvings around.
My buddy is a pro carver.

Make the deal with the carver before you drop the tree.
The carver can be responsible for the transportation and drying.
That way he can decide when he wants to use it.
Plus some carvers cut to standard project lengths so the pieces dry faster.
My buddy hires a log truck to haul in his wood when he buys a bunch.

It’s on my list of stuff I want to do… this is a basswood we took down at the cabin- Great carving wood but might be too soft for a bear

Watch out for white pine. It cracks when it dries. Thorpe used green white pine and a lot of his carvings cracked.

Interesting. White pine is what I am thinking about trying to sell to carvers
