That doesnt involve a gun? Lol

The little snot has starting nipping and short of busting it in the mouth..which i havent done..i dont know how to correct this behavior..or even if it can be corrected.

He just started it the last 3 days.

He doesnt do it all thd time but enough of the time that its a concern.

Do any of yall have any experience with donkeys that might help?

Thank you for your help in advance.

A smack in the face when it nips might stop it, adjust force as required.

That's how I teach my pups not to nip and bite. First step I say "no bite" and immediately quit paying attention to them. If it continues they get a light rap on the snout with the same message, "no bite." I never have to get very forceful, they seem to get it pretty quickly.

I don't know anything about donkeys though.

Needs some ground work and wear it out. Also, when it attempts to bite smack it on the nose.

Pain is a very good teacher. That is why Momma always smacked our behinds when we were bad. Not saying you have to put a 2x4 up side his head, but a swat on the nose might work. You don't want them to be scared of you, just let them know they did something wrong.

Edit: The nut put it better than I could. I didn't see his post before I posted.

You should never discipline with force; you should put the donkey in Time-Out and tell him he's not bad but his behavior is- that seemed to serve us well as a society mad

40 years training horses. As stated pop it in the nose and adjust level as needed. It their way of starting figure out if they can establish dominance over u. Bad habit to start but easy to fix especially early on.

Make it stand in the corner.
If that doesn't work use your fish bonker to smack him.

Yes that has worked well with this generation of kids. If this behavior is allowed to continue the donkey will soon identify as a gerbil or something and come home one day with purple hair and a lip ring.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Just like any other training, make the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard. Like others have stated, a sharp pop on the nose every time it nips. Don’t be too soft with it either, you want it’s nose to smart a bit. You don’t have to beat the bejesus out of it, but if it doesn’t sting some it won’t learn.

And you gotta do it EVERY time, don’t let it get away with ANY nips, no matter how small. Right now it’s trying to figure out just how much it can get away with. Consistency is key

I worked with a guy that had an Arabian mare that was bad to bite if you left your are on the fence too long. He had a Wyoming cowboy from the nearby air base come to his place and got bit. That cowboy jumped over the fence grabbed her tung and pulled it out the side of her mouth and rolled it between his hands until it was dry. My buddy said she never bit anyone again .

It is a sign of disrespect so it cannot be tolerated. From what I have seen (in horses) a lot of times it is proceeded by someone hand feeding which is a bad idea.

The only horses I ever had that would continue to push its luck came up behind me and caught an elbow in the snout. That was the end of it so you can fill in the blanks

Good advice in many comments.

Horses, mules, donkeys, if you watch them and how they work out their order of bosses, they aren't dainty about it. They can really thump on each other. Take hair out of each other's hides.

So a pop on the muzzle isn't going to hurt them . A sharp smack in that soft area in between the nostrils and jawline, under the eye, just above the nostrils, is a sensitive area and that really gets their attention.

As mentioned, just like dog training, or human kids, consistency is the key.

That rule, in training anything , animal or human, is an easy rule to remember.

Smack him quick, as soon as he nips. Don't wait for seconds. As soon as he is drawing back from a nip, he is smacked sharply. When he looks startled , don't then coddle him with petting, as if you're sorry. Let him think about it, but after that, be polite when he wants to be good. Reward that.

It won't take but a couple smacks or so until he gets it. They catch on fast.

I had a friend who had a horse that would try to bite your left shoulder as you approached to mount.
She finally taped a super-hot baked potato to her shoulder and let the horse bite it.
That was the last time I ever saw it try to bite.
