This was grandpa's hunting rig. Dad used it as his daily driver in high school. 1947 Willys. They replaced the stock 4 cylinder with a flathead 8.

I don't know about the newer ones, but the older Jeeps were notorious for breaking down. They got around excellent as a 4x4 offroad rig, but were very lightly built and could manage to break things like axles and drivelines stock. Put a V8, lift and oversize tires (which practically every Jeep you see from 1950-1980 has all three) and you need to replace/upgrade all the running gear. Very popular, especially back when I was younger. It is partially a status thing, but also they were one of the few rigs actually made to drive offroad. Problem is unless you do a lot of upgrades to them you spend three times as much time working on them as you do driving them offroad.

Like I said, I can't speak for the newer Jeeps made in the last 20 years, I do really like the fact the new Jeep pickups come with a manual transmission option. If only they would come with a shorter (extended) cab and longer bed I would likely be doing research to see if their reliability has improved over the years.

Wife had to have the 4 door JKU. Its built up and looks great as lots of the stuff is custom. She takes the kids and i on all the jeep badge trails and such. Camping is more like packing for a backpacking trip due to the lack of room. Sketchiest one has been black bear pass in CO followed by table mesa in AZ. Its underpowered, has horrible mpg (same as the v10 f250), and is always in need of repair. With all that its really capable and keeps the wife happy.

Happy wife, happy life!

All new vehicles are complete garbage I don't care what you buy. Nothing is built to last past the warranty date. Old jeeps are good.
If buying new buy what you like and move on cause they're all junk.

Rusty - I don’t have a new Jeep. But, I do have a new F-350. Wifey bought it for me in 2019 and I could not be happier with the truck, or Wifey.

So they can take photos like this one. My daughter took the photo in Colorado the 14th of this month. They did 4 of the badge trails, the 5th one was closed due to weather.

They do take a lot of work, but when you have an expert mechanic......my 2 year old grandson.

I had a 98 Cherokee XJ and that was a great vehicle. Never did any modifications to it but used it off road quite a bit. Never any serious or expensive problems and gave it to my brother in law at 300k miles. Worst but cheapest fix was replacing the frost plugs. I wondered why they put them on the side where you had to remove the fuel rail and exhaust manifold to get at them…. Dumb.
