I’m hesitant to ask, but…

Which .22 WMR round is best for coyotes?

Let me explain. I know there are much better choices for a coyote gun, and I own some of those. Realistically I’d only be taking half a dozen shots a year with this rifle at coyotes.

I just picked up a CZ 512 .22 WMR that I plan on spending lots of long days in the woods with. Mostly shooting squirrels as well as a few coon called out of den trees. I’ll also make an occasional attempt at calling in coyotes.

It’s not my favorite squirrel round or coyote round, but I’m hoping it’ll serve its purpose for me as stated above.

I know Dennis Kirk killed a lot of yotes with his .22 WMR back in the day, for those who remember. Of course he was limited to a rimfire after dark I believe in NY.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I have used the CCIs out of a revolver and they are decent. Out of a longer barrel I think they would be better.

CCI 40g hp. Solids are more fur friendly, but shoot them through the body with solids and they are going to run off and not leave much of a trail.

22 mag will kill anything in North America, if I could only have one caliber (and I knew ammo would never be an issue) that would be it.

For chest shooting coyotes a 33 grain v-max works good. I have a .22 mag handgun and the light bullets won’t cycle the action reliably so I use a 50 grain federal jacketed hollow point.

Find out what your gun shoots well first, wide variance in accuracy with different ammo types from my experience

X3 Maxi-Mag CCI's. I've had quite a few .22 mags over the years and everyone of them liked the CCI's.

I’ve killed hundreds of yotes with a 22mag over the years. 50 gr feds work ok but don’t expand enough for me. CCIs dindnt shoot well in my guns.
If your hitting bones I like the Winchester 40 grain semi jacketed hollow point. Many have fell to this round. But the last few years I’ve switched to the hornady vmax. Stay away from the leg bone and they go down pretty quick. Ranges 25 to 100 yards. Three dead in first pic where they fell. Two chest shots and a head shot.

^^ those in 40 gr FMJ is what I have used for years. Performs real well on coons with thick fat. HPs tend to trace when heavy fatted coons are shot at an angle. Haven’t shot any yotes with them though.

I picked up a few boxes of Winchester 30 gr V-Max this morning. That was all they had at the gun shop. I’ll have my eye open for some 40 gr rounds as well.

From what I’ve seen with online reviews, the gun isn’t real picky. Seems to like about anything in 30-40 gr. I’m a little concerned about penetration with the 30 gr V-Max on yotes. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to try them out. I was initially leaning towards the 30 gr V-Max from CCI or Hornady or the CCI 40 gr JHP.

Thanks again for the info and keep it coming.

Yoteguts: Are those V-Max you’re shoot 30 gr? That’s the only weight I’ve seen them in.

Pretty sure they are 30 gr. I’ll look when I get back to the shed. They will splash if you hit a bone. Shot a big male yote in the neck at 20 yards. It blew a 2” circle of hide off his neck and blood clots all the way through his neck but no penetration. He went down hard and don’t know if he would got up or not. He got a second one in the chest. Those little vmax do great on well placed lung/heart hits.
With any 22 mag , shot placement is very critical. Your gun may make the decision on what you shoot. Doesn’t matter what a bullet can do if it can’t be placed in the sweet spot.

LMAO @ window of death! I have yet to find a way to take coyotes or hogs that I don't enjoy and out the window always makes me feel a little bit smug.

CCI generally shoot good in my experience at least all of the types I have tried through the six 22 mags I own. They make a lead tipped soft point (I think 35gr ) that I wouldn't recommend. Got a couple 300 round boxes of them when they were all I could find. Accuracy is good, but I've never seen one expand, if I'm going to shoot something that acts like I solid I'll just buy a solid/fmj and would prefer 40gr or better. Finished of a nice tom lion this winter that a client had made a poor bow shot on. Gun was loaded with those soft points. Recovered one of the bullets against the hide on the far side, the other passed clean through. The one I recovered looked like it could be reloaded, no visible deformation at all.
