I was mowing my yard yesterday and noticed several new spears coming up. Is this normal? I have never heard of asparagus coming up in august.

My asparagus sprouts until the first hard freeze. I never mow it off until it has turned gold and been dormant for a few weeks.

Yes, it's normal anytime during the growing season if the ferns are cut.

If you keep harvesting it, I have seen it happen at a lesser amount.
We don't around here, just letting it grow tall and lush, where it turns a bright GOLDEN hue, which is often how we find new patches !

I didn't harvest any this year as I only planted it last year. I had no idea it would produce any time but spring.

The main thing is not to over harvest.

Its kind of like how you kill bamboo by constantly cutting it down to drain the roots.

Asparagus is the same, you cut until it tells you to stop, smaller thinner spears. Then let it grow to recharge.

I have harvested up until mid June or so. Then heavy dose of fertilizer and let it fern out. Another dose of fertilizer early spring.
