Trying to find a lab puppy for my son. The money people are wanting seems crazy to me 1500 to 2000. That's 2 mortgage payments, outta my price range. If you know of someone with pups in southern mn or northern Iowa shoot me a pm. I'm not looking for any kind of pedigree, super dog, just a nice lab.
Or maybe even someone with a good male to breed our female yellow lab.

I spent "good" money on a lab pup for a kid a couple of years ago. The breeding has gotten so profitable that people are pumping these things out so fast that they aren't labs anymore. I ended up having to put the pup down after it bit/snapped at the 3rd kid. The final straw was the pup spent all day with me, my best friend and his daughters. When we went to leave the pup jumped in the truck along with one of my buddies girls and the dog bit her, hard. That was the final straw and I had her put down. When I took her in to the vet, he told me that was the 3rd one that month from the same breeder he had to put down from the same breeder due to being mean. My suggestion is to find a "walmart dog". Find one from a good lab that had an "accident" with a neighbor dog or something. That is where I got what was by far my best dog. Rally Hess gave me a GREAT dog years ago from a litter of his and sadly, she got a tick disease so her time was cut short. My hats off to you for getting your son a pup. I think every boy needs a puppy to bond to.
I have nothing clever to put here.

160user, I know what you're talking about. Years ago went to look at an old rowboat. Flipped it over and there was a litter of black and brown puppies under there. Lab and rottweiler mix. Dad took one home and she was a great dog, loved the water, even retrieved, but if your duck fell in the mud she wasn't picking it up.

I paid $1,200.00 for my male lab seven years ago. I paid $1,000.00 for my female six months ago. Both are AKC registered and came with breeding rights. Both have excellent hunting backgrounds and hunt test/field trial masters and champions in their pedigrees.
That is the going price and to me it is worth it for dogs from good hunting stock. The crazy prices I see ($1,500-$2,000) for unregistered puppy-mill dogs blows me away.
Have you considered a rescue for your son? Around here there are lots of young labs up for adoption. The shelters are charging around $400.00 in adoption fees.
Eh...wot?

I have been around hounds some. No matter how well bred a few will be counterfeits. Some get ruined by owners. Whoever started the lie that its a good idea to let a 4-5 month old pup get in a knock down dragout with a coon, ought to be horsewhipped. Usually after that they are scared of coons rather than wanting to find more. So sometimes a pup has it in them but the owner doesn't know how to train.
Buying a pup is a lot like buying a box of chocolates.....
You get a better chance of a nice dog with good breeding but its no guarantee. Those kinds of prices are crazy and bring out the worst in people. The kind of breeder you want is one who needs convinced you are worthy of a pup.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

I’m just the opposite, it’s all these $400 dogs that are ruining the line. You get what you pay for. A good pup will go for $2000+. A finished dog will run $5K or more. To me a Lab is a working dog, not a pet. My son has been offered $6K for his and he isn’t finished, doesn’t have his Masters title. Look at the pedigree. Visit the Sire and Dam. Watch them work. Most likely, if the male and female are workers, then the pups will be as well.
Any working dog will cost you. Down here English Cockers are the plantation dogs and pups start at $1K. My son had one, trained it, then sold it for $3500. She’s the top dog now on one of the top plantations around. On top of that, he gets first pick when she breeds or $1K if he doesn’t want a puppy. You get what you pay for.

The kind of breeder you want is one who needs convinced you are worthy of a pup. Yup, the guy I got our lab from wouldn’t sell dogs to two people who wanted him to take the pups to the airport for an agent to fly them to the owners. Breeder said “ I just couldn’t bring myself to sell one of my pups to people that would buy them without meeting them face to face.” He actually did deliver one other pup to airport for another buyer that visited the pups in person earlier. His pups were 800-1200 and mom and dad are hunting machines. The first step for me is finding out how often mom and dad hunt. More the better.

I’ve had Labs, coonhound’s, and beagles for over 40 years. The highest prices lab pup I ever bought I shot at a year and a half old. Unbelievable pedigree, champion upon champion in there. Absolutely the dumbest turd I ever owned. A group of local duck hunters have their own line of dogs going here. Breed good dog to good dog. When a few guys need a pup they have a litter. They charge each other a reasonable amount. Last one I bought was $400. Lots of retarded labs anymore. My beagles are a hodgepodge of sizes, colors, and are my own line. I’ve never registered one in my life. Dogs are a tool for me. I’ve got attached to a few over the years, but they have to be good hunting dogs to take up kennel space here.
