K9 training is far more intensive than generally required for hunting dogs due to the highly structured and controlled recognition of very many substances and responses in my opinion.

That narrows way down if you have good assessment testing and you know how to train a dog. The main problem with police service dogs is that the cops think they are expert trainers and the reality is that they are really just barely proficient handlers at best. There may be some exceptions to this but not many. I think 75% of drug dog indications are false...

Give the average cop a dog, k-9 stickers on a vehicle and a few week handler course and then he is an expert trainer....just ask him/her.

I’d say that is accurate if you have high standards and expect a working dog to earn it’s keep. 1:10 is about the ratio that makes breeding stock.

I paid $800 6 months ago for my female yellow lab. She’s actually the “granddaughter” of my other 12 year old lab. I’m pleased but wow, I forgot how much work this dog training is! Missi and Lady. Original stock came from Kiln , Mississippi ( hence the name Missi). Aces Retrievers. Highly recommend!

Depends with a Lab. Do you want a hunting partner meat dog or do you want a well oiled machine robot Field Trial Champion?
After hunt test I really didn’t care if my dog took a straight line back to me after retrieving a duck. Whichever way was faster meant the sooner I could get back to shooting. The basics were always there, but I wouldn’t be overly strict on the stuff judges would dock in competition. When I had my dog, neither I nor anyone hunting with me had to retrieve our own ducks. Was he a FC, heck no, he was a meat dog!

When I was 16 I got pulled over with a bag of grass. The cop said his dog struck on my truck that dog and cop were all over that truck tearing it apart. It was in the head liner they never found it. To say the least he wasn't very happy when I drove off. whistle whistle grin

They don’t even train police dogs to hit on weed anymore…they are after the harder stuff.

I'm old. I remember when 100 bucks would buy you the best blooded hound in the country.

Don’t feel bad…the only reason I know is because a few of my friends are police. It might be a regional thing too, idk.
