I have always been a rebar guy. Cable has always interested me but I have been reluctant to switch because of how rocky my ground is. I think its time to hive it a try. I’m looking to purchase bulk material to build my own and am unsure of what diameter/strand count etc is best. I will be using it primarily for my coyote work. I’m planning to give the wolf fangs a try as it seems the most economical option for this season. Any help in selecting the proper cable size and ideal anchor length will be appreciated.

Thank You
-Justin

I go with 3/32 7x7 cable
12 inches is plenty in my rocky WNY ground and I use wolf fangs
Tried a few 18 inches and couldn't even pound it in that deep.
12' has held every critter I've ever had on land
Beaver I still use rebar
Earth Anchors are easy to make and cheap. Lot lighter to carry also

I went for broke and used 1/8” cable…now F150 approved removal.

I use 8" of 1/8x1x19 ss cable attached to 8" of #3 chain on top. Eliminates the problem of having too long a cable sticking up (not being able to drive cable full depth).

15" of 3/32" with 2" pogo washer. I cut em on pull day. Put new one on to re-set.

I trap 90% sandy loam soils. 10% clay.

If you plan on retrieving them I’d do with 1/8”. If you are going to cut and run I’ve never had an issue with 3/32”

If you’re planning on cutting them and leaving them, I’d save a few bucks and run 3/32.

If you’re going to try to recover and re-use them as much as possible, I’d use 1/8”, just lasts so much longer.

Length depends on your soil types. Heavy, firm clay soils, 12” is probably plenty. Looser loamy soils may want to go longer.

I run 12” and drive them in at an angle so the anchor is usually only 8-10” down. But I work in extremely dense clay soil types almost exclusively.
