I just start using one. The question I have are they supposed to be custom fitted with measurements? The medical supply company took one out of the box and let me try it on without taking any measurements. It seemed to fit. Actually, I am not even sure what type of measurements they would take, if any.

No measurements just lots of options for masks.

They are not "custom fit". As Oh Snap mentioned, there are several options available in terms of masks and then those masks generally come with a few different sized (S/M/L) masks and the straps are elastic and adjustable.

Just happy to be here.

GT,
I have used one for a few years now.
The headband and mask come in different sizes. (i.e; Small, Medium, Large).
You can look at different styles on the web sites that sell the equipment.
Many mask manufactures have a template that allow you to measure your face for a mask.
The head band comes with a size to fit the individual mask.
In reality you should get the doctor from the Sleep Study Center to fit you with a combination of mask and machine.
The nurse and the CPAP machine seller would send someone to your home to properly fit your mask.
Most importantly the "Pressure" is dictated by the physician to fit your sleep breathing habits.
The sleep center should explain everything to you and answer any and all questions you may have.

I didn’t use a sleep center. I did the home study test. It was a two day test. I don’t know how accurate these tests
are but the results said I had severe Sleep Apnea. These Cpaps are a pain in the butt to use and sleep with.

I use the nasal cushions. I keep a beard year round.
I won't use a mask.

Keep at it, use the machine daily.
Eventually you will get used to it.
The mask and machine will take time.
Benefits include more restful sleep.
Less grouchy and irritable.
Better dreams.
Wake more refreshed.
It does take time...
Oh, and keep everything clean!
You don't need infections.

I did a preliminary at home test and that got me referred for an actual sleep study. Unless you do a sleep study, it’s going to take you a while to dial in the correct pressure to reduce the apneas as much as possible. And I say reduce because even with the machine, you’re still going to have a certain number of events per hour…and every night is different. I use a BiPAP…it’s got separate pressures for exhale vs inhale.

Learning to sleep with it on is definitely a learning curve…my pressure is pretty high and took me a while to get used to it. At first it made me feel like it was trying to blow me up like a balloon and made me very claustrophobic. My wife on the other hand loves it because I no longer snore. I must say that I do feel more rested and no longer take daytime naps. It’s amazing how little sleep you can get and still feel better than before.

If you are not insured pay the money and go see a sleep specialist. VA
does the sleep checks for free. It will save and extend your life!

I tried the mask for 3 months. 2 different masks. I lost more sleep using it than without. I'm going to try the mouth piece. The medical supply guy told me every one has some form oof apnea.
I cannot use the mask

i have had one for over 10 years.
i use the mask that covers the nose.

i used mine from day one with no problems.
i used to get up 3 or 4 times a night to use the bathroom. i go to bed now and hardly ever wake up before im ready to get up.

went on a cruise to hawaii about 10 years ago for 15 days. forgot and left it on the kitchen counter.
that was the 15 worst nights of my life.

that trip was the only nights i havent used mine since i got it.

I'm probably a bit skeptical , but has anyone ever , anywhere on the planet ever been told they didn't need a machine after consulting with a company who makes money from sleep tests and equipment ?

Like I told you last time you brought this up, the symptoms of sleap apnea are very easy to recognize so people who have the symptoms are the ones who is consulting their doctor about it, getting tested and getting the machines. They don't just go in with a sore toe and ask for a sleep study. lol

I've had my CPAP over 20 years. I'd be dead if I hadn't gotten it or surgery to cure my sleep apnea. I'm 100% sure of that.

20 plus years for me with a BIPAP. It took awhile to get used to it. Have packed mine on two week hunting trips. Have hauled it on snow machine trips. I use a 1000 watt generator when out in the country. I'm on my 3rd or 4th machine now. Have had some bad nights waiting for new machine to arrive.
As grumpy as some of you seem to be all the time shows the need for better sleep. smile
