3rd generation 2000 4 runner. Battery light pooped on. Checked belts and noticed crud and soot showing from inside the alternator. Pulled it out and had wife take to Autozone. Tested and was only putting out 11 volts. Shows no codes with the OBD reader. Dang battery light still on. Anyone else been through this?

well if your alternator is only putting out 11 volts then you need a new one. I would suspect your battery is bad as well since it wasn't being charged from your bad alternator. Id replace the battery as well for good measure, or have it load tested at least to see if its good or bad. Like JT said check the voltage on the the battery terminals while the vehicle is running, the lowest reading you want is 13.5 volts but 14-14.5 is ideal.

Lordy when it rains it pours. Found the belt had jumped off and into other grooves and was barely turning the alternator. Now is surging and no power when push on accelerator and backfires as well. When surges high battery measures up to 13.4

If the belt jumped your timing is off as well. You have to bring the engine to TDC, and put the belt back on, I would get a new one as the old one jumped for a reason.

The alternator belt is what had jumped not the timing belt that also runs the water pump.
Finally found a major vacuum leak. Patched for now and it is running good. Passenger side air intake hose coupling is what is called.

He got it fixed now guys. It was the alternator. Reason the light was still on after replacing it was because he didn't get the belt on quite right and it had popped off. Fixed that and the light went out but then out of the blue it started running like crap and backfiring. That was a totally unrelated vacuum leak on the other side of the engine. He's got the vacuum hose jury rigged until the new one we ordered gets here. It was $52 at Autozone, and $16 on Amazon!
