I wouldn't worry about papers if you aren't planning on hunting competition hunts. And I would steer clear of most competition bred dogs if you are wanting to just pleasure hunt. Now I haven't coon hunted since I was a kid (I've went out with someone else probably three or four times in the last twenty years) but I still see people get pups out of those papered competition dogs to run on big game. Some turn out, some don't. I never cared for walking to empty trees, and all too many competition dogs are tree happy, they have to tree fast and hold tight to win competitions, most times if they don't see anything in the tree in the limited time they get to look it over they are just given circle points which don't count for or against a dog, but if they don't tree faster than the other dogs they aren't going to win competitions. Hunt with the dog and buy what you like (if you can afford it, good dogs don't come cheap) don't worry about papers or color, or mouth. As one of the Walker brothers of foxhound fame said, when someone asked him what kind of mouth he preferred, "the one in the front of the race four hours in usually sounds pretty good to me." I don't care what color a dog is, if it is good enough I will feed it. I've bred the same line of dogs for almost 25 years now, and I don't worry about anything that doesn't bear on their hunting ability, if it affects performance, like conformation, I'll take it into account.

Get a hound to go for the sound - get a cur to go for the fur. Or hunt a Faulkner cur and get the best of both worlds! Cur style but open trailers. Steve Block has some pups now I think. 715 222 0263

I have nothing for sale…but I always find it amusing when people say stay away from papered dogs, dogs with a lot of titled dogs in the pedigree or even mutts for that matter …the difference is nothing if you are dealing with someone who actually hunts and breeds their stock according to ability.
A competition dog is as much a pleasure to hunt as a pleasure dog…the only difference is drive. When I turn a dog loose, I want to tree a coon. I explained what I don't like about a lot of competition bred dogs, I want lots of drive in my dogs. I hunt six to seven days a week about nine months out of the year, if they don't have a lot of heart and drive they aren't going to satisfy me. And some dogs have all the heart in the world but just aren't physically tough enough to hold up to that kind of hunting, would be great for 90% of hunters though. I didn't say to stay away from papered dogs, I said not to worry about papers if he was just going to pleasure hunt, as in "don't worry one way or the other whether the dog has papers, just worry about how he hunts."

I agree - get a Mt Cur. Coon hunt at night and squirrel hunt by day. Will be the best pet your kids ever had. Might be a little over protective of the family, though [/quote] I agree on Mt. Curs being protective of their family, ours is the most protective dog I've ever owned. Nothing gets past him, we sleep pretty well with him in the house. He's not mean, just leery of anyone not part of the family. I knew nothing of cur dogs before we got him, boy did we learn quick.
