Im leaning towards Chickasaw Plum, but just wanted to get opinions from thosw more experienced than I. There were also trees that had fruit exactly like this but the fruits were dark purple. Some of the lighter red ones were super sweet, and some of the dark purple ones werent sweet.

The Chickasaw, or at least the local ones here, don't get purple. Bright green to peach/orange to light red when fully ripe. And they are done by the first of July. Also hard to tell from the photo but a tall Chickasaw would be shoulder to head high at the most and always in a suckered thicket.

I'm going to say another type like American or Sand.

Doesn't look like Chickasaw to me either. Given your location and the size and color of the fruit, I suspect Mexican Plum. I'm no expert on Louisiana flora, so it may be some other Prunus species that I'm not familiar with.

If they're fruiting now in mid Sept in the South then that's not any native plum.

And Chickasaw is never just sweet. Even the best of them are tart.

But they are the best plum possible for jelly.

Possibly one of the chickasaw/japanese hybrids like Bruce?

Little known fact but south Louisiana historically had quite a few fruit and nut breeders and dozens of named and unnamed cultivars of all sorts of fruit hail from the area.

I think Swamp Wolf is speaking wisdom about the timing, but jbyrd may be right. We don’t have wild persimmons here (though they aren’t to far east of here). I’ve had a few myself in southern MO, but I’ve never seen them any color but orange. Will they darken up like tofan’s specimen?

Easy way to tell. Tofan, did they have a pit like a peach, or did they have multiple brown seeds? Pits=plum. Multiple seeds and jbyrd gets the gold star.

Not persimmons. Persimmons don’t have “stems” that you can see those hanging from. At least none that I’ve ever seen. The fruit seems to hand directly from the branch. I would throw another vote at some kind of Mexican plum

Definitely not Persimmons and Swamp, i think our timing is different than yours. I found another Prunus species today, likely Americana. These ones are twice as big as the ones above. The fruit above had what I would describe as extreme tart, but check these ones out.

I'm thinking hybrid as I can't recall any of the native prunus plums having the "frosted" look.

Ok good info no doubt. These are all from land that maybe 50 years ago was cut, so perhaps some hybridizing took place.
