Hello everyone, new member and first post here. My question is how many traps do you guys run at one time? I work full time, 12 hour night shift, and will be able to check traps when I get off in the morning. I don't want to stretch myself too thin, but want to maximize the time I do have. I have 18 coil springs right now and I am going to see how that works once season opens. Most of the time the traps will be on the same property, but occasionally I will have them spread out on different properties. Targeting dogs and cats. Thanks for the input.

At most 3 dozen with spares to swap out when needed.

All depends on the area and what I am after. If just canines probably not much more than 18 - 24. But if you mix a water line in then you never know.

Southwest Wisconsin in the drift less area, farmland woods and bluffs. Been thinking about ordering another dozen or so, but don't want to spend the money if they won't get used. Not looking to get into the water yet, maybe in the coming years.

This. Use what you have for now and with time you will know what you can work with efficiently. Better to have six good sets out than 20 hail mary's.

Personally I'd want at least a dozen more to start, especially if in skunk country. 18 is a decent amount to run for a beginner, but doesn't account for replacing skunked up traps.

All depends on your work ethic an how much sleep/family time you need an only you can answer that. I work 10 hours a day an swing shifts every other week. My commute is an hour one way. The weeks I'm daylight I only run a dozen or so that way I can check them before work an be home in the evening to help kids with homework an stuff. Over the weekend I'll triple that size for the following week because after I get off night shift at 6am by the time I get home kids are all in school an I can check/set skin/flesh for 3-4 hours each day an still get 3-4 hour's of sleep. I think 18 is more than enough just starting out. Especially if you're catching stuff.

Thanks for the help guys. I figured there'd be a learning curve and I'd have to adjust based on how things go.

I usually average 4-5 hours of sleep during the day anyway, so I think that I can be on the lines/taking care of fur for a few hours every morning. I get off at 6am, so I might be checking traps in the dark which shouldn't be too big of a deal.

Depend on how far you gotta drive to your sets and how much time you have, if you’re gonna put up your furs or freeze em and do it later. And how much you like sleep lol. I’ll probably try to run 50 sets this year, maybe more, and that’ll probably take me 4 or 5 hours to check. Probably another 2 hours doing put-up, depending on how the check goes.

When I was working 12s I ran 20-30 sets, but my line was close and only took me an hour or so to check.

Only takes 1 trap to connect with an animal ... location and setting on sign is more important than numbers of traps. My opinion, if one trap is good, two or three will be better; so there is that. You didn't save how much area you have to trap ... You can place more traps on 10000 ac than on 40 ac.

Your time management and line conditions will determine how many traps you can manage. And replacement traps are a consideration as mentioned above.

Start with what you have and let your experience be your teacher. You can always add traps if needed at anytime. Bare traps catch just as well as dyed and waxed or whatever process you use to protect your traps. Good luck on your season!

Welcome- Based on your work schedule, skinning and fur prep might be the constraint on time. If your setting good terrain- you can cover a 40-acre parcel with a few traps for yotes.

Yes. Quality of locations over quantity of locations.

This here. With 18 traps you can cover a lot of land. Find the right locations and you will be good.

Locations aren't too much of an issue. I night hunt coyotes with thermal imaging, and have access to 2,000 plus acres of land spread out over 2 counties. So I already have a good idea where to be setting traps. I have a hard time getting to all the land, and many of the farmers want the coyotes gone so adding trapping to my routine seemed like the next step. It'll help me put more fur in the shed, hopefully lol. Putting up fur is already something that I'm used to doing, so I have that factored in already.

Like Osky and Backroadsarcher said, focus on good locations. If you find good spots, you won’t need 18 sets to keep you busy when working full time. You don’t want to make it too much a chore on a daily basis. If you’re catching some, remaking sets will eat up a lot of time. Not to mention that you want to peel them warm asap. A dozen empty traps might take an hour or two to check, but 6 successful sets will take a lot more time than that when you take remakes and skinning into consideration.

18 Traps is fine as long as you have a few replacements for remakes.
