I've never tried one. Someone said there was a way to rub two quarters together and make a sound or something like that.

Circle a plastic poker chip with your thumb and fore finger, and scratch the ridges with a nail or a key, sounds like a squirrel cutting walnuts., or, make a smoochy sound with your lips thru your circled thumb and forefinger, any sound a squirrel makes can be duplicated with practice. You can change the pitch or sound by using your other fingers.

In my area there is Two squirrel varieties . Fox and the smaller Grey/ Black squirrels. Both have their own vocal styles. So I have two styles on my lanyard when I stalk them. Definite plus for me.
Using my dog now so not much use in carrying any calls.

I won’t go without one……. Don’t always use it and they don’t always work. But it is a tool that can work and sometimes works. !!! Lol
I’ve even had coyotes run straight at me twice when using a call.
Mine is a “ bellows “ call….. lightly pound the bottom and it produces a great squirrel sound.
A goose may honk....but he won't wave

I hunt squirrels in my own backyard…definitely two different varieties…dead and alive. Both have their own vocals for sure. One you can hear and one you can’t! Also, one cleans out the bird feeder and one doesn’t!

Two quarters works too. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Biggest advantage to a call is getting a squirrel to look around the tree trunk if he is hiding on the back side. It will also let you know if any are around when they answer the call. Gotcha. We have tons of oaks and pecan trees down here. Squirrels are almost a nuisance.

Maybe I’m missing something, what’s the call used for?
Makes them reveal their location when the woods are thick.
