The paratroop kid made the Army cough up an Alaskan posting as part of his re-upping contract. He's been up there for a couple of months. He just dumped his first AK black bear and is probably getting the hide and required parts off of a side of a mountain as I write this posting. I guess its a decent sized bruin and I'm sure he wants the hide tanned (I'm not tackling it!). Any suggestions about getting it tanned in state or sending it down to the lower 48 to get it processed? Doing anything with bears has not been in my wheelhouse...

Depends on where he is at.

There is a tannery in Fairbanks. Guy on the wilderness section called Isnarewolves does tanning there. Not sure if he does bears.

Also there was Alpha tanning in Anchorage.

He's at the joint Army/Air Force base on the edge of Anchorage. When he finally called last night back at his truck, I think he's going to have the skull professionally done but now not sure about the hide. He put a number of holes in it as he skinned out out (his first bear skinning and on sloped ground). Good thing he's only 22 and in the best physical shape of his life. That hump out was pretty tough. He didn't think he would have made it without his 2 walking sticks.

P.S. The pic with the .44 mag pistol is just for scale. He shot the critter with a .300 Win Mag.
