Our society is heavily dependent on corn. It, or one of it's by-products, is in everything.

Dogfood
Gas
Sodas
Breakfast cereals
Animal feed
and more

Farmers are growing less corn this year and those that are are having to use less fertilizer. So not only will there be less corn, there will also be less yield.

If you think prices are bad now, wait til next year. The only two I see a way around are sodas and breakfast cereals and that is a stretch.

My point is, get ready. It is gonna get worse.

If someone can show where I am wrong, PLEASE show that I am wrong. I sincerely hope I am wrong.

The corn I’m seeing here has been phenomenal. Most of our corn feeds chickens though.

Always 200+ bushel corn here, and that number always seems to be climbing. There is so much corn they are putting it in fuel and telling us it's a good thing. In a few weeks there will be huge piles of corn next to the elevators because there isn't room to store it all. Maybe it's because I live in the #1 corn producing state in the country, but I sure don't see a shortage of corn.

corn here is BAD !! We had around 45 days without a drop of rain. (may28 - mid july) Timing was dreadful. Corn got hit with 90 degrees and no rain right when farmers were spraying the ammonia and it parched it. Most corn fields look like you ran a weed eater to the tops. Burned to crisp. Very little yield on early planted corn. But the late corn is ok.
Prices are going up just on the shear cost of producing it....

Unfortunately for farmers I don’t think commodity prices are based on cost of production.

The other side of this coin is that low production is the best thing to ever happen to farmers and past high production may have outpaced demand. So prices should rise, to the benefit of the farmer, but they could also stay the same because demand may equal supply.

Prices almost always helps demand reach the supply. If there is a shortage of corn and the domestic market rises then that will shift exports down so there will be enough corn, it is a matter of at what price. When corn goes very high then farmers typically feed less to hogs and beef too so those items could be where some price rising may well be. Poultry both for meat and eggs are huge consumers of bean meal and corn too so eggs and poultry products may be impacted as well. On the other side of the corn it only takes one very good year to rebuild shortages in most commodities. Wait until late winter and spring when the market is using prices to buy acres for commodities as that will tell producers which crop to plant more or less of. Most grain farmers work very hard to maintain a favorable crop rotation for their land even with markets working to change that.

My life revolves and depends on corn and I’m the first guy to say that anything over $4 corn is no good for anyone.

Pawnee I agree 100% , and I just climbed outta the combine for the day. We’ll finish corn harvest this week if all goes well. Cost of production was high this year, creating a high break even cost. So we need the current prices to sustain. However, ideally, the cost of production would be low , as well as crop prices ( hence the $4 comment ) , creating an affordable food supply for all. Win win.

It is $7.33 per bushel in Broadway, VA @ the Virginia poultry growers co-op. I don't expect corn prices to drop much in my neighborhood. I claim no responsibility for low prices in the corn belt. I understand shipping/ trucking can add a lot of expense as far as actually getting to the final consumer.

Ran a grain cart all day today for a buddy.
Monitor on the combine never dropped below 280. Was well over 300 a lot. Curious to see what that entire 360 acres will average.
Great crops here.
80 miles south they burnt up.

The secret is keeping production cost down. Bury a small fish by each hill of corn. If the coons dig your fish up just call the animal rights people and they will refund you for your loss.

On a serious note we will be lucky if a lot of farmers are not left holding the bag. Wait and see how high interest rates need to go to satisfy the Feds.

Corn is currently $6.44 a bushel at the local cooperative. It's forecast to drop in a few days.

Looks like the USDA is saying overall acerage planted was down 8% from 2021 and and estimated yield down for national average down 4+ bushels. I'm sure that will affect consumer prices some next year but will it be a smoking gun that is easily recognizable and the main smoking gun...? The Fed Reserve and Sniffy and the minions still have 3-6 months to keep screwing up the economy until higher corn prices filter into the overall economy. They can break a lot more things by then...

Are farmers poorer in other parts of the country? All of them around here have brand new “goin to town trucks” and their houses are remodeled. Whatever “bag they are left holding”, id take one please.
