Good morning Trappers,
A coworker of mine has two drums full of traps that belonged to her grandfather that they would like to sell, they are a mixture of long springs and muskrat traps, I'm not sure how many. How would you be able to tell if any of these are collectors items, and what would be a fair price for them. Also what would be a fair price for the rest of the traps.

Not enough information to determine a price. How many traps are in the drums? You say longsprings and muskrat traps, number 1 longsprings would be considered muskrat traps. Need to know how many, what size and what brands, plus the condition of the traps. Could one make arrangements to look at the traps?

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

What Nittany said . If you really want to get a fair price dump them out and take inventory .It is the only way to know what a fair price would be .If the owner does not want to go to the effort to see what he has .The next step would be to take a chance and make a reasonable but low offer .Most likely the buyer would not lose money on a situation such as that .

Some advice, if you think something is collectible don't "shine it up" to make it look better. Also, don't throw ANYTHING away. If you post some pictures on the trap collectors forum on here the guys will help you out with ID and rough values.

I have nothing clever to put here.

If your coworker is in her 30-40s, her grandfathers traps could be fairly old and there could be some collectors in there or they could all be users.

A quick way to sort them, without raising suspicion that there might be something of value in there , is to make 2 piles.

“V” cut out of the pan. And solid pans.

The cut out “V” are most likely users. The solid pans could be collector. Not a 100% fail proof way to sort but it is quick and easy.you can worry about what the solid pans are later.

And as 160user said - do not clean the traps except to wash off dirt with plain water. No chemicals.
