Hello,
I am still hoping that someone may be able to help me identify this early trap that I inherited from my grandfather.
A couple of contributors on this board noted that it looked like a Newhouse slick pan, but nothing definitive.
Anyway, I give it one more try, posting this to the top to see if I can get a response.
Not much in the way of markings on this one, only the initials HF and a diamond shape stamp in multiple locations
Thank you in advance,
Grant

With the wealth of knowledge on here I am surprised that no one has chimed in or offered some thoughts.

I have nothing clever to put here.

There are a lot of super knowledgable people here on the forum, but maybe this is one of those traps that just can't be identified. I was hoping to have an idea of the age of the trap, and perhaps the possible origin. In the title I did say it was an early Newhouse, but to be honest, I have no idea or expertise in this area. Thanks again.
Grant

I lived in Ontario for most of my life. The first bear trap I ever bought had the initials jb marked on the bottom just like yours does. Did your trap come from the parry sound area?

Hi lots,
No, actually. It was from Quebec, but who knows where it started its life.

ok I will take a shot at it. The springs are not Newhouse. Most likely blacksmith made. Lots of blacksmiths back then. Not sure the mark on the springs as far as maker but most likely Canadian. The jaws appear to be Newhouse riveted teeth. The pan, base and nuts look Newhouse. There are trappers marks on the bottom. Its a nice wall hanger .Chain is missing.
