Having flashbacks. Many moons ago in the oil boom towns of West Texas, Wednesday night was ladies night at the taverns and dance halls with half price and often free drinks for the women. Many would go to Wednesday night prayer service and then head to the joints with hubby minding the kids. A good time was usually to be had. I sure tried to be at one of them because I really liked to dance.

His radio show is still on and it is Cowboy Corner.
His first TV show was In The Bunkhouse with Red Steagall and later changed to Somewhere West of Wall Street.
His band used to be called the Coleman County Cowboys and later was changed to the Bunkhouse Boys.

I met Red back when we were both young men in the 1960's and have continued to follow him and his poetry and music ever since.
He is an outstanding individual. Over the years he has raised millions of dollars for the West Texas Rehab Centers. He would have probably been a cowboy except he came down with polio when he was about 16 and started playing the guitar as a part of therapy and the rest is history. We probably would never have known a Reba McEntire if not for Red.

He has a Cowboy Gathering in Ft. Worth at the Stock Yards the last week in October every year. It is well worth the trip where you will travel back in history and see everything from a cattle drive, to a ranch rodeo and even a trapping show.

My friends keep telling me about that shindig in Ft Worth so I might try to get to it one of these days.

I remember one episode of his radio show, his guest was Larry Mahan and eventually Larry told of how he had noticed Ty Murray at a young age and helped mentor him in his early years.

The calves had to hold out for a commercial break that morning LOL

Larry lived down in your neck of the woods at Camp Verde for a long time. I think he sold that ranch and moved out.
If I remember right his youngest daughter was born there.
Sometimes I have to clean the cobwebs out.
Most people liked Larry and I think he is a pretty good guy.

Cowboy Corner comes on here every Saturday morning, on the local radio station. It is a great show, I love hearing those folks he has on tell their stories, we are fast losing that.

A lot of those ol time super star rodeo hans were also great guys CH. In addition to Mahan, I have gotten to meet Jim Shoulders, Tommy Likes, and both Ken and Gerald Robert's. Most of my buddies from Kansas rode in chaps Robert's made.

If you ever get up north and travel around Strong City, Cottonwood Falls, and Council Grove guys like the Roberts bros, Ray Wessel and John Brown start making sense. You either get handy or you move to Wichita and build airplanes.
