How much grease do you put inside a hub if any? I just replaced the hubs on my camper. All I've ever done is put a golf ball size glob in the hub, smear the race good, hand pack the bearings, and rub a little grease on the inside of the seal. I repack my bearings every spring and never had a problem or loose bearing/wheel. My neighbor said he packs as much in the hub as he can. I've always been told that can cause the seal to fail? What do you guys do? Any reason for one over the other?

Pack the bearing and smear the race and seal contact surface. Too much grease makes it hard to dissipate heat. Boat trailers can be a little different because of being submerged. Bearing buddies are your friend here. They keep more pressure inside the hub than the water pressure.

I never put any grease in the hub when I repack bearings anymore. When I was young I did. And greased the bearings just by rubbing grease on the outside of the bearings. But after having to replace lots of implement bearings an older mechanic showed me how to repack bearings right. A wad of grease in the palm of my left hand and the bearing in my right hand between my thumb and first two fingers. Push the edge of the bearing down thru the grease and repeat. You will see the grease pack right thru the bearing around the rollers. Regrip the bearing in another spot with your right hand and repeat until the whole bearing has grease coming past the rollers. He told me that wad of grease in the cap or between the back and front bearing didn't do no good. If you think it will melt and lube the bearings when they need it the bearings are already out. This was when I wasn't even 20 years old. Learned a big lesson. Been packing bearings like this for 45 years. Never had any go bad.

I put extra in because if it ever warms up I don't want centrifugal force to push grease out of my bearing trying to level out in the hub.

We probably have companies who have studied this subject since the mid 80s when this theory was explained to me but I haven't boned up on it.

if you repack every spring , what your doing is fine

seal failure is a bigger risk than a set of bearings hand packed in one-two seasons

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Farmer here, Some quick grease tips- first thing I do is get it all over my hands, then smear a dab anyplace I may step or sit. Then a streak on my glasses. Before I’m done always make sure an important call comes in on my phone. Be safe out there.

Nice to see someone else operates like I do!

How do you ID a screw machine man? He's the one that wash's his hands BEFORE he takes a whiz!

Lol. Soon as I open a tube of grease, I already got it all over everything. My wife got grease on her hands this morning from her bicycle grips??? I never even walked past the bikes yesterday when I was packing bearings.

Ha! I tried. She's still out rolling around on the deck laughing!

Bearing buddies on my trailers, old car and pickup some on race hand pack bearings.
Good glob on spindle, if you pull the wheel replace the seal.
