I picked up a minty colt 1911 desert elite in 10mm a couple of weeks ago but I'm finding shells are rarer then hens teeth here. Can a guy shoot 40 sw thru it?

Yes, and no.

Pressure wise perfectly safe like a 38 in a 357. Though it may not cycle the stiff springs in most 10mm guns.

But unlike 38 and 357 the 40 and 10 lack a rim to headspace on so they headspace on the case mouth. This leaves the 40 unsupported against blow of the firing pin in the deeper 10 chamber. Only the extractor will be holding it so it's a question of how strong of a grip does it have.

Ahhh. Ya that makes perfect sense. Never thought of that and kind of related it in my mind to shooting short, long and long rifle out of my 22.

I carry a G29 constantly. I have thought about this on more than 100 occasions. The only time I would put 40's in it would be in a dire emergency. Last ditch effort. Not sure how the shorter rounds would feed.............

Sounds like a hand load proposition using long 200 gr bullets seated out long enough that when the cartridge chambered, the bullet is just touching the lands. Then it would be somewhat supported up front and not just held in by the extractor

you can with the revolvers using moon clips

with a 10mm autoloader you need a 40 barrel

the round headspaces on the case mouth and the 40 will drop too far in

you might be able to do it some fed from the magazine because the extractor will grab the rim and keep it from going too deep but it isn't likely to be fully reliable or a great idea

also your likely to build up crud on the shoulder that the 10mm case mouth headspaces on
