The Virginia Bear Management Plan clearly states that no deterent works once a bear has obtained food from a human. Well, at least no deterent that leaves the bear alive.

We had an electric fence around some peach trees on our property in VA. Our fence charger came up missing. We blamed it on vandals until we found it about a month later up on the hill behind the peach trees with bear tooth punctures in it. It takes a lot to deter them.

Deal with that for 2 months in the orchards. hang caramel apples from the hot wire, that works for a couple days. They will figure out the electric fence quickly. Lots of bears VS electric fence videos on you tube. Bullet right below the ear is best deterent!
