So here is the situation, we have a young man who shot his first deer up at camp last year, he was planning on hunting again this year. But... he flipped his dirt bike in August and cracked 4 vertebrae. Now he is in a back brace and his dad says he can't take much if any recoil. So now my question.

Is there a product on the market that can hold a gun (similar to a lead sled) that would be able to be taken into the woods and set up in such a way the kid can still aim the rifle but not have recoil?

A good muzzle brake can reduce recoil by a very noticeable amount. I recommend Holland Quick Discharge brakes. My 7STW with a Holland brake is soft enough my 13yr old can shoot it

How about something light recoil, .223 - .22-250 or .243 with the right bullet.

I have a 243 for him but his dad is nervous to set his progress back. I'll look into a bog pod never heard of it.

Edit, looks like the bog pod doesn't reduce recoil. I may be wrong.

A mercury recoil reducer in the stock and reduced recoil cartridges will also reduce recoil.

my dad uses 300blk out pistol he does not shoulder it he puts the buffer tube up to his cheek , he doesn't turkey neck with his neck as it has a double fusion so he stands up right places the buffer tube to his cheek takes aim and squeezes off a round shot 2 decent bucks with it that way.in the 3 years he has used it since 2015 when he got rear ended on the way to deer camp. before that I think he just avoided shooting hadn't shot deer in years.

a 223 semi auto with a muzzle break has almost no recoil , he will get more jostled riding in a car on WI roads , let dad shoot it first to see how little recoil there is and no you don't need to put it to the shoulder even, he is not 18 so he needs to use it as a rifle , just leave the stock collapse in.

try some deer season xp or American white tail ammo for the 223. you need good shot placement but it will kill deer you may not get an exit wound with some ammo
unless you know someone or have a 300blk

223/5.56 ARs are generally fairly easy to find

How about the young man take a step back and get healed before taking any more life threatening risks. It's already apparent he suffers from the immortal youth syndrome.

But I guess we've all been there.

I would think a good well built ground level shooting house with shooting bench would be the best case. Then you could haul out a lead sled and weight it down and leave in place for him.

For a light recoiling rifle the AR platform has alot going for it. In the original 5.56 there are now available heavy bonded bullets that take it up a notch from the 55gr varmint gun to a serious contender for deer. In alternate calibers such as the 6.5 or 6.8 recoil is a touch more due to heavier bullets but still low due to the smaller case size. But the real beauty of the AR is that you can truly fine tune them with an adjustable gas block and various buffer and buffer springs so that only enough energy to cycle the action is needed and no more. Throw a good compensator out front and you can have a light flat shooter that hardly moves. But that gets into building one.
