My wife, She-who-must-be-obeyed, and I have decided to move to Idaho in the spring. Consequently, She has instructed me to get rid of most of my toys. I've already sold my snow-go, ATV, one of my canoes, a Freedom Arms .454 Casull, and three rifle scopes. Haven't lost any of my beloved rifles yet, but some are on the block.

And now I turn to my traps and trapping gear, the reason for this post. I just don't have the time to list it all item by item on the Shed, package it all up, and make multiple trips to the post office. And given shipping rates from Alaska, it would be prohibitive. So I'm making a solicitation to ALASKA trappers:

BUY ME OUT! I'm looking for a lump-sum offer for the whole kit and caboodle. Even lowball offers will be considered.

A couple of guys already cherry-picked most of my Belisles and 330s, but I still have some left. Have a few dozen #1 LS, maybe a dozen #1.5s, some #2 and #3 coils, #3 Bridger four-coils, three or four CDC wolf traps, some #3 and #4 DLS. #110s, 120s, 220s, 280s, and 330s. One Species Specific 12-inch body grip. Two or three dozen each fox and wolf snares. RAM snares in three sizes. Stretcher boards, and one wire beaver hoop. Miscellaneous tools and equipment. Marten boxes. A collection of trapping lures. And some antique/collectible traps I may consider selling separately.

Tomorrow I'm going to get a better inventory and can provide the info to serious inquiries. Please text or call 907-602-3957 if interested.

Hi Paul! I lost your email address when I abandoned my hotmail account. Shoot me an email if you feel like it, and I'll reply. sarafinjames@yahoo.com

Interesting thread.

I always thought of you as a lawyer and I am really surprised that you actually selling stuff a trapper would own!

Well, for more than twenty years I mistook this site for a lawyer's forum, what with all the arguing going on. Imagine my embarrassment when I found out this is actually a site about trapping!

I was a trapper long before I imagined becoming a lawyer.

Are you interested in buying my gear?

Just sold the whole lot for $800. Several thousand dollars worth of trapping stuff. You can't snooze on these deals, friends.

Now I have to meet with two guys who want to see my reloading tools and components.

Thanks Paul for tolerating this thread.

Oh, I did keep most of the collectible traps for separate sale. To those who inquired about these, I have to put off my inventory until tomorrow.

Jim,

If you thought Alaskans were cranky to liberals, wait until you arrive in Idaho!

Good luck in your ventures.

Please, please, just don't try to change our politics. You're moving to Coeur d'Alene or vicinity? Just what this state needs is another attorney...

I'm not an attorney anymore.

I was hoping my buyer would chime in, cackling over what a deal he got. Maybe he's a lurker.

I understand there has been an invasion of Californians to Coeur d' Alene, where we'll relocate. The Californians should keep the locals busy worrying about liberalism.

Jim thanks for the deal on the trapping supplies! That should keep us busy for a couple days sorting it all out and getting a good inventory. Everything is in great condition and will be a nice addition to what we already had. Good luck down south!

Yes I am guilty of mostly lurking on here.

Is Idaho a Constitutional carry state, like Alaska, or will I need one of those stinking permits?

A permit is not required, though they are available for reciprocity in other states if so desired.

What sort of "crap" do they have to deal with down there, as compared to AK?

I'd like to know what to prepare for.

Certainly you should know James, anyplace with excessive democrat influence has numerous societal problems. Like the place you are leaving.

Constitutional carry, but you can get a permit for reciprocity and you need a permit to carry on certain Universities, etc. Not that I expect you'll be spending a lot of time in such places, just something to remember if you go to visit a grandkid or something.

Liberals, must do what she demands. Sell your stuff I need to have room to pack all my shoes and clothes you don't need all thay gear you collected your whole life. Yes mama.

Take charge it's not to late...

Edit; if it doesn't show its sarcasm but was my first thoughts.
I can't imagine making a big move like that and selling out and replacing stuff later if needed is probably the smartest and easiest choice.

What prompted such a big move?

Hi TJ! Long time no see. How have you been?

I doubt you'll find Hal around here, and I'm done with it too--the Trapper (politically correct) Talk forum anyway. Haven't posted there for almost a year now, and really don't miss it. I may drop in to this forum now and then.

If you get down to Anchorage before I leave, let's grab lunch again. I can't remember...who paid last time?

I am pretty sure the banker paid last time.... smile

Not sure if I will make it down again before you leave, but then I don't really know your projected exit date then either other than "spring". Not scheduled to make at trip down there until May to get the car serviced, but if something changes then I will let you know. One last meal on your dime would be well worth the trip! grin

I lurk most of the time here. Been a while since I poked my head in the main forum, and it sounds like it should stay that way.

I've been to CDL several times and seen the traffic. But what's the deal about drugs? Are they in the schools?

Could it be worse than Anchorage?

When you say several times, how recent? CDA has exploded since the lockdowns. It's ruining Idaho.

I know 20 some years ago Anchorage was as bad or worse for drugs, no idea how it has kept up.

Nice info, Ken. I've never been turkey hunting.

I expect the challenge will be finding a place to hunt.

Hiya, Viking! How are things in our great state's capitol?

Does anyone know what Canada has to say about me hauling my guns through their country to reach Idaho? After a couple hours of search, I've determined that my handguns will be barred. But I can't find anything on the number of long guns I can take, ammo, and such.

I have to figure out the best way to get my gun collection out of Alaska. My wife has already convinced me to put four rifles up for sale. I don't want to give her more opportunity.

Handguns, no way. Not sure about the rest, but can share a story:
Way back in '85, my ,(at the time), soon to be bride and I made the pilgrimage from Kodiak to Juneau, via ferry to Homer, then highway to Haines.
We got to the Border, (Beaver Creek, I belive), minutes before the midnight close, and the sleepy guard asked about plants, "none", produce, "none", and firearms, "a center fire, a shotgun, and a .22 rifle".
He suddenly was WIDE AWAKE, shouting, "22 RIFLES!!!????
I corrected him, and we were waved through.
Our only trouble on that trip, (aside from over-heating my Blazer, due to creaming a flock of ptarmigan near Destruction Bay, and stuffing the front of the radiator with feathers and bird parts), was getting back into the USA at Haines.
They snuck the gate a mile or two past the border, and as such, found me with a cold Canadian lager, open, between my legs, and another empty on the floor.
Oh, to be young again.

Just doing what I want now.

You can mail firearms, long guns only I think, to yourself in another state without going thru an FFL. so you would mail to yourself in Id. care of your son. Likely bringing pistols across the border will be a problem. Additionally, there is alot of news of new gun bans coming in Canada this month.
I hear you can do most of your border crossing BS on line, they actually want you to do that. Just have to show up when you say your going to show up.

X2 mail the long guns. You can also transport your handguns in checked baggage on the airlines just as you can long guns

Where's Boco? I want to complain to a Canadian about the reply his government sent me, when I asked how many rifles I could bring through Canada. I'm hoping to avoid shipping a few of my nicer rifles and shotgun and bringing them with us when we drive out of the state. These aren't ARs, they're bolt-action and single shot sporting rifles and one over/under shotgun.

Their form reply said they cannot advise as to specific situations, and it is entirely up to the discretion of the customs agent at the border crossing!

This means I have to drive 93 miles from Tok, Alaska, to the Beaver Creek crossing, find out if I and my rifles happen to please the border agent, and possibly drive the 93 miles back to Tok, if they won't let me cross. Tok is the nearest settlement on the US side from which I could ship a gun.

And I thought the US government was bad.

Look me up when ya get down here Jimmy. We moved to Hayden in 2017 and it has changed a lot already. I’ll buy you lunch and maybe some of that reloading stuff if you don’t move it before you get here.

There is a lot of public land down here you shouldn't have any trouble finding a place to hunt. The problem will be getting away from other hunters. Our population has increased dramatically since covid and the woke movement. It seems every semi-conservative from the entire west coast has decided to move here but they are bringing a lot of there big state values. Once you are here and settled contact me and I will buy you lunch and shoot the bull. I have lived about 60 miles north of CDA for over 60 years so I know the area and can point you in the right direction for hunting and fishing.

If I remember correctly Jim you are a fan of the Ruger #1. I believe that is on the BANNED list of firearms in Canada now. Have you checked into taking them on the ferry system and avoid Canada altogether

Sounds like you've gotten rid of most traps, but you're not moving south 'til spring? What are you keeping yourself busy with this winter? Have you written any more of "the Dark Season"?

When I was in college and making the annual trip back and fourth from UAF to SE AK, they used to make you fill out a form for each gun along with the type and serial number. One time they had me pull out every gun and go through the forms and match them to the gun. Other times, they didn't even want to see the forms or guns, just waived us through. I am told they don't do that anymore.

While you are on the subject of issues getting across the Canadian border, make sure you aren't transporting any native artwork with marine mammal parts, like baleen, ivory, fur, etc. with out all the proper CITES paperwork. I am told they have a room at the Beaver Creek crossing full of baleen, ivory, etc., that folks leaving didn't have any paperwork for and didn't have time to turn around and get it in order, so just left it like a pocket knife at TSA.

You may be better off just to take the Ferry from Whittier to Bellingham with all your guns, ammo, and other stuff packed in the truck.

Or put on a south bound Northland barge or similar carrier.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. Some of the girls in my harem are special to me: my Ruger No. 1s are always fun, singly or as a group; a Dakota Model 10 Dlx. in .280 AI; a Luxus, a semi-custom break-action, switch barrel, side trigger rifle made by a little custom shop in southern Ohio, with two 26" barrels, a .30-06 and a 7mm-08--a fine exotic lady with her Turkish walnut stock wedded to the classic frontier look.

And then there's my Berretta O/U 20-gauge shotgun with engraved receiver, as sweet a shotgun as ever I swung on a pheasant .

I don't have what I'd call a large collection, but I like to invest modest sums in guns. Not just any old Remchester. Not a plastic stock in the house. I am supposed to let such treasures out of my sight by shipping them with USPS or a local moving company or airlinesI where their baboons throw my girls around and break them? I want them in my custody until I get to a gun safe in CDL.

The idea of taking the ferry is intriguing. I'll have to look into that.

Jim

Good question !!

I worry about my Beretta 686 every time I check it at the counter. But it has survived thousands of miles of travel and the baggage baboons so far

We moved from AK two years ago to just south of CDA. My wife loves it and I MISS AK!!! The hunting here is good, I've killed deer and elk since I've been here and this year I'm starting to trap again, chasing bobcat. BUT with that said nothing compares to AK and once you move out and your wife sees the outside and gets to enjoy the summer weather in the PNW you will never get her to go back to AK lol... My advise is ship your traps. You can use them down here (I sold all my traps in AK) and it costs a lot more to replace them, I'm in the process of doing that now.

Best of luck and welcome to the state with the highest prices real estate and the lowest paying jobs in the US lol...

Thanks for your concern. We're moving to be near our son's family and our grandkids while they're still growing up. They moved to CDL, my daughter-in-law's home town, a couple years ago. Our grandkids spent most of their lives in Alaska, and we miss them.

Those are awesome guns,James. I share the desire to invest in firearms but at 65 I no longer see the logic in it. I completely agree with the fear of letting those fine arms out of your possession. Hope whatever you decide works out.
I also hope your son allows you to share that love of quality with his children.

About 5 years ago I almost bought an acre parcel just outside of CDA for $19,000. That lot would be around $75,000 now.

Crazy prices around CDA these days. Liberals can't stand their own policies but keep voting for them.

Where IS Boco? He used to leap to defense of Canada's honor.

Maybe he could explain why there is a business in Tok, Wolfe Arms, that makes money by shipping long guns rejected by Canada customs. Some poor schmuck has to drive ninety miles back to Tok because some self important Canadian customs agent at the Beaver Creek crossing doesn't like his looks. The law leaves it up to the discretion of the individual customs agent. Meaning, you can't plan for what guns to take. If you take any rifle, you're gambling on having to enrich Wolfe.

I'll have to find another way to get my guns to Idaho.

I'm also discovering just how much work it is to move from a place you're lived for 37 years.

Jim

James good luck in Idaho I grew up in CDA was back a few yrs ago and simply no way I could live in that rat race again you can’t even drive to most of the places I hunted growing up
As for your gun issue I think I can solve the problem I will be in town sometime this spring to buy lumber and stuff for the summer projects I have to get done you can just give them to me to take care of while you are gone and if or wheb you return I will get them back to you😂

May have changed since I did it but then you can take all your guns to air freight and ship them to yourself and pick them up there. For the 5 months I lived in the states in 2002 I just packed them all up dropped them at the airport air freight in anchorage and picked them up in Tacoma just regular freight charges. If I remember right I had to have everything with me to box them up because the checked each one to make sure it wasnt loaded and I boxed them up there and they shipped them.

Curious if you did the online thing or the app? Can you list your firearms ahead of time and get them approved?
What you are experiencing, James, is the result of an extremely far left liberal govt. Kinda like what Biden is trying to make this country.

If I remember correctly Jim you are a fan of the Ruger #1. I believe that is on the BANNED list of firearms in Canada now. Have you checked into taking them on the ferry system and avoid Canada altogether

White 17 believing and above being a fact may be two different things. I believe, as silly as some of our firearms regs may be, that the Ruger #1 single shot rifle is not banned. Too silly even for Canada. Time for a fact check. I am not gonna do it as believe it not to be true.

Ok white17 what I got out of that is a home modified Ruger # 1 can produce greater than 10,000 joules. Case in point is someone made (not commercially available) a .460 WBY Mag. which would exceed 10,00 joules. That would break the rules but not the average commercially available calibres.

Point taken what you are saying though is that this could be the thin edge of the wedge. Would not argue as believe our government basically believe guns are bad and has an agenda to max rid of them one bite at a time.

I also think what the lawyer is saying is that by definition the government is including "any variation" of the Ruger #1 that COULD be modified. That would be all of them.. The devil is always in the fine print

So we gun users talk in terms of foot pounds muzzle energy not joules. 10,000 joules is 7,375 foot pounds in hunter talk. And yes devil in details noted and well this flagged publicly.
