Our new puppy Ellie gets told off a lot by Finnigan. Our German Shepard, for all sorts of things like, eating out of his bowl, stealing his toys, chewing on things she should not chew on etc. To the uninitiated observer it would seem that he does not like this little brat at all. Today we got back from our walk and fin and I were playing fetch till he got bored and sat on the stoop in from of the door a few steps up where he could overlook the yard. Meanwhile Ellie was pestering doodle ( a mountain feist ) she kept running up behind him and grabbing his stubby tail. This was about 20 feet away from the front door with chickens close by scratching in the dirt. at one point doodle got fed up, showed his teeth and growled at the little Ellie. what happened next was a blur and took less that 2 seconds. Finnigan launched himself of the stoop and has Doodle on his back with his throat in finnigan mouth. He held him for half a second , let him go and went over to see if Ellie was ok. Then went back up the steps and sat back down on the stoop in front of the open door. Now Ellie and Fin are sleeping under the table head to head.
So he may be a gumpy fart when it come to little Ellie, but no one can touch her if seem without going over him first. I wonder how this develops the she gets older and maybe she will be even bigger than Fin . But I think those two will over time look after each other and become quite the pair. As i wrote in an earlier post, she loves him and on our walks she is his shadow. I have not needed a leash for her yet and i guess here on our property I never will need one for them.

That’s always nice when they can get along.

I did not know that Fin could move that fast. Neither did Doodle by the look of it. Doodle did not get hurt just a dent in his ego.

pack dynamics are fascinating. most interactions are very subtle, but now and then the law must be laid down, lol

Michael, my father had German Shepards most of his life. He would never get another breed. When one went of old age, he carefully chose from a good breeder and got another . Every one of them just knew to be a good watchman , and all learned even just by watching what to do.
