Just a question I guess. Do Grey’s and Coyotes get along? I have cameras on a property I trap regularly for the last 5 years or so as can count the Grey’s I’ve caught on one hand minus the thumb and a couple of fingers. Only caught 1 maybe 2 Reds in that time frame as well, so one hand would account for ALL the fox I’ve caught on this particular property.
Now all of a sudden this week I’m starting to get pics of a pair of Grey fox in one area and a single Grey on the front part of the property. I’m not saying I’ve caught them all in the past, but I run trail cams year round and NEVER had a pic of fox, lol. Does the coyote population have anything to do with their appearance? I’m not upset, I think it’s pretty cool unless the manager starts getting pics, lol.

Greys can climb and avoid the coyote. It sounds like you just don't have many fox.

Generally no they don't coexist well. But I wonder any recent clearcuts? Greys are a creature of the brushy areas and should thrive in the first thick growth after a cut.

Here in town the reds are in the open areas like golf courses or hugged up tight to human habitation. Greys are on the overgrown lots and kudzu patches. Coyotes everywhere.

That’s what’s crazy…this is a quail plantation. There is a stand of planted pines that’s thick on the bordering property that butts up to this property. Just odd they show up now.

It's my understanding that coyotes don't get along with any other k9s. If they can catch and overpower, I think they're toast!

They don’t appear to like them here. As our coyote population grows it seems our greys are increasingly more rare for me.

Iowa,
Greys in traps don't stand much chance but my coyote buyer used to say put one grey and one coyote in cage and the grey will back the yote in the corner...I never tried it.

It has been my experience that if you have a lot of coyotes in an area you only have a hand full of grey and even less reds around the area. Also if there is a lot of coyotes in an area there will be very few possums, but if you have a lot of possums in a new trapping area it is time to move on.

From my observations the greys do a little better against them than the reds -- but not alot. We used to have reds here -- been 3 years since me or any of the neighbors have seen one.

I would tend to believe him based on general temperament of the two when caught and cornered in my traps. Coyotes usually cower, greys scrap until the bitter end.

Yeah, at a human, I wonder if it's the same when there's no 2 leg involved? Btw, I've caught some coyotes that clearly want to eat my lunch!

Oh, one on one the grey may put up a good fight be won't stand a chance. I'm just speaking of the usual sull up attitude of a coyote in a cage. Not the occasional fighter though.

I put some old cull chickens with some caged fox they layerd down with the fox looked like they were best friends. Went to town for grub and on my return there were fox and feathers.

I am so old that I trapped in the B.C. years - Before Coyotes.
Every year trapping foxes, I caught 60% reds and 40% grays.
That seemed reasonable and accurate based upon the terrain and habitat that I trapped.

Once the coyotes moved in and took hold the reds became scarce. Eventually their numbers seemed to increase, and I suspect that they learned to somewhat avoid coyotes. When I catch reds, I release them trying to keep them around. The grays simply disappeared. I think the coyotes can catch and eat them. The last one that I saw was in the fall when coonhunting. We were taking a shortcut to the hounds and jumped a gray out of some wild grapevines. I was happy to see it. That was 27 years ago and I have not seen or caught one since.

Pa,
I Agree Willy i also trapped B.C after coyotes moved in both reds and grays where gone for years now i'm catching a good many reds but only around electric fences the coyotes seem to stay out of the pastures. I have only caught one gray in the last 10 years or so. I too release all foxes. 10 red fox on one property this year its A beef cow operation

Dispersing.

Tiss the season to be jolly, and move it or lose it.

We had plenty of coyotes maybe 30 years ago. Not many Fox period. Then the explosion in wolf populations and driving out the coyotes the red Fox became more.
At that time greys started to show up especially on the bear bait cameras. They do like to climb. Now with the deer herd so reduced in my area the wolves are down in number and pack size the coyotes are starting to come back and the Fox numbers are falling off again.
It’s now been quite a few years since any greys on the cameras. Very little sign of reds.
Cats seem to stay fairly steady thr out, fluctuating with the rabbits and grouse.

I put out carcasses on the lake out front in the winter. Back when reds were more plentiful the reds were terrific alarm systems. Watching them they don’t eat much and when they suddenly take off better take note. As wary as they are I’m amazed they can be caught and pushed by coyotes. All the years out on the ice I’ve never seen nor gotten pictures of grays on lake baits tho they were around.

We have lots and lots of grays here. They seem to know how to stay out of a coyotes lane. They stay in the thick stuff and don't get out in the open. If a gray fox was 35 pounds there wouldn't be such thing as a coyote

Gotta live up to the nickname...
