Having grown up and resided in Central NYS until 2004 I am very familiar with lake effect snow.

I'm sure you folks on here that live in these areas have a hard time explianing to other folks exactly how much the amount you actually get at times.

Here's a link to a Youtube weather channel that shows it pretty well. Hope you folks can dig yourselves out ok.

Not to bad here woke up to 18 inches but will probably get that much more today. I'm on the edge of the ban. My buddy one village over has 3 feet and will end of with four or five feet by dinner time. Tug hill at the end of lake Ontario get even more than us in one dump. Get out the snowmobile and enjoy it

I saw a meme the other day that says "If you don't find joy in snow, you'll have less joy in your life, but the same amount of snow." laugh

I couldn't imagine those amounts. When it comes do y'all get out there ever two hours or so to keep up with clearing it? If you have critters to take care of and chorin to do, how do ya keep ahead of it? Your alls winters are like our 78 blizzard lol.

When its that bad,,we have to keep up on it round the clock.Or your toast.Might have to do the driveway and trails to the animal barns two times during the day then twice through the night.Pretty much every 6 hours.

Yep gotta stay after it Catch. Clean out the driveway and trail to the barn 3 times today. Hunker down and eat out of your larder cause you ain't going to the store. Makes for tough trapping too but there is fur that moves and can be caught but it's tough

Turtledale, I get so much enjoyment from all y'all that live and trap in area's with a ton of snow, or those out west running a 100+ mile yote line, or those on the coast trapping tidal area's. We don't have that here, maybe inconvenienced from time to time with a foot of snow or flooding, but not like you all.

It's smart and gives the warm and fuzzies to keep up a solid larder when the weather breaks bad. Nothing better then kicking back with a smile cause you know your good. Life has given me some unsuspected turns but I keep smiling, others have worse. I do wish I could experience what some of you do as a normal day.

Southern Lewis County , we received about 12” yesterday. SW wind sent lake effect bands north towards Watertown and northern Lewis County. They can have it. As for snowmobiles, trails do not open until northern zone deer season closes.

BOCO,

All our state land (similar to your crown land) is off limits to all motorized vechiles.

The exception is established official state sanctioned "snowmobile trails".

One must stay on the trails that cross state land.

Nobody such as a trapper/hunter may leave the trails to run a trapline.

Snowmobile trails are made for citiots to ride around, burn gas, and
look at winter scenery on their way between bars.

Same for atv trails in the spring, summer, and fall.

If you are going to legally trap, hunt, or fish on state land
from a motorized vechile, you must stay on the state sanctioned, established trails.

Consumptive users of wildlife on state land are discriminated against but
we still have to pay a yearly registration, and pay trail user fees even if
we only use our motorized off road vechiles on private ground.

It suxs to be us !!!!!

We pay insurance and free licence and can use 4 wheeler or ski doo like any licenced vehicle on and off road.Only place you cant go is on private property and major highways.
Every kid in high school back in the day had a skidoo.Used to pick up the girls walking to school and "give them a ride".

The township my camp is in has eleven miles of roads, all dirt. no winter maintenance. Snow machines and ATV's allowed year round. Most of the surrounding townships are the same. Some of their roads get plowed though.

Maybe Tundras, Scandics , or other similar sleds. Most snowmobiles cannot go through very much deep snow, they are trail machines, like Walleyed said, just a means to legally bar hop. Ontario and Quebec have extensive trail systems too, don’t know if they are open year around though ? Here on Tug Hill and the Adirondacks, after deer season when over 500 miles of trails open, not unusual to have 5000-10,000 snowmobiles on the trail system on any given weekend. Unfortunately, it also keeps the emergency rooms and sometimes the morgues, busy as well.

Was on Snowy Range in Wyoming one year and met a kid on a sled. He was going back to the pickup to change jets in his carb because it "just wasn't running right". Something I never was around. They were climbing a slope with hopped up sleds and catching some amazing air when they cleared the top. Very fun to watch.

We have groomed trails here also.Mostly for tourists. The small towns in the north cater to the skidoo tourists.
Most locals have their own trails to their camps or their favorite fishing lakes etc,but some buy permits to ride the groomed trails.
Trappers can ride groomed trails without having to buy any permit, since all the groomed trails came after and usually on top of trappers trails.
FN dont pay to ride the groomed trails either
Tourists get lost on the wilderness trails here and if they want to venture into the frontier on trappers trails they have to hire a guide.
