Or is that just a cold weather thing? I'm just east of Fayetteville. GO HOGS!
Haven't seen a bear yet. They claim to be just south of here. Do they
hibernate here In winter? Wander into town for a dumpster lunch? How do they work?

Just north of you, the bears on the Missouri side would go into a semi hibernation on average around the first week of December if I remember right. Judging by the GPS collar data they would stay pretty well hibernated for most of the winter unless we got an unseasonably warm spell in which they would wander around for a few day or two staying close to their hibernaculum. Most hibernaculum we found in ozark habitat was brush piles, fallen tree piles, caves and a hollow oak tree.

What TF said. I have gone with researchers from OSU to bear dens to examine cubs and they told me the same thing.

Bears hibernate primarily because of the lack of food in the winter. I have talked to several trappers over the years who fed a bear or bears all winter. The bear just camped on their carcass dump. The colder, nastier the environment the more chance food is scarce.

This.^

Warm, they'll move around some.
Cold and snowy, they hunker down.

Yup when they run out of food they hibernate.

I had a friend with a pet bear it would not hibernate, another animal trainer told him to stop feeding it. He said he reluctantly did and sure enough went right to sleep.

Here in wv, the bears that truly hibernate all winter are the sows going to have or have small cubs, the cubs are born weighing just oz. and hairless, the males will layup during real baad weather but will get up after the storm passes.
