Finally got a wolverine and its a beauty! Caught it in a old Victor #3 square jaw that I recently 4 coiled. It was at a fox/coyote set with bait in a snow hole and some lure/fox pee set off my sled trail. It was missing one toe on the caught foot(freshly missing) but has all the rest of its toes. Weighed 28 lbs.

Nice! Great markings. What's up with it's eye?
While I agree with White to some degree about the inevatable action when they are caught in a foothold, I have come to appreciate the lack of drama when they find a 330!

Congrats buddy. I see a white toe. White17 and AV both have points on their preferred way of catching. Live ones are cool but often break claws. 330 caught wolverine that freeze usually end up with green belly and even a mouse can start eating them. I’m happy for everyone I get though. Good job. Looking forward to seeing your next one too.

Congrats on your first wolverine and it being a beauty too. I still get so much more excited about wolverines than I do anything else.

That's awesome! Always wanted to catch a wolverine. I missed my chance.

I was sort of hoping you'd caught it in one of my old traps...

They are also my favorite. And I should add a dis-claimer: Of the 6 I have taken, only one, (ironically, my first), was taken in a 330!
That said, I have been "involved" in several others, both lively, and not.
They are something else.

It’s not a cross fox but a similar design. A local guy makes them in Anchorage. Been using it for a couple years now and it’s holding up well to my abuse.

Not sure what happened to its eye. Either damage from a recent fight or while it was trying to get out of the trap. It also had fresh cuts on its snout.

Thanks Ryan! Yep I have 330’s and footholds both out. This one stepped in a fox/coyote set. Like you I am happy with any I catch regardless of the trap. Amazing animals.

That’s how it was for me as well. Last season I was on the edge of country that held them. So this season I moved areas and seem to have decent sign so far.

Good luck on finding some!

Pretty animal and nice catch. Your in timbered country it appears. You might research the white 17 snare pole set which I think is in the archives. it is a set that will be fairly specific for wolverine. That skull is a trophy in itself or worth about 50 bucks green if it doesn't have any bullet holes in it.

Thanks everyone!!

Just for the record I did not shoot it in the head. That eye injury happened before I got to the scene.

Need to get some buckets sets out and wouldn’t mind trying the white17 snare pole out.

Went and tried breaking my trail out yesterday. Spent about 12 hours out there fighting the snow, overflow etc. Managed to put in about 18 miles of trail (4 to go). Trail looks more like a trench now. Got to my last set and found a pleasant surprise!! [Linked Image]

It was a miserable day.

Time to make a white17 snare pole. Got some 5 gallon buckets made up for 330’s also.

Sweet!!! Love the pic with the light through the snow! Hope the snow settles for you and you get it all broke out! Looks like you got some critters running your trail smile

The light pic did look cool but it wasn’t any fun getting it out of that hidden washout. Even worse when I turned around to head back and hit the other end of it. So dumb.

Thanks! Think the wolves came through between storms. No working gear though.

How entirely beautiful is that shot of the hidden washout...but frightening, all at once.

Think I got lucky catching them and lucked into an area with good numbers that like to travel my trail. Previously I never had one travel my trail just cross it sporadically.

Wow. Gorgeous. Look at that delightful necklace bling . And dark- I love the dark ones. His fur is so glossy, the blue refractive light just shines on his big paws and tail.

A rug with nice edging to show those colours off would look amazing...

I'm partial to ruffs on a parka or pull over. With 2 you can do a rug and get a ruff!

Got out on the line yesterday and had a friend along on his mountain sled to help break out the last 5 miles. What a chore the entire day was! We bit got stuck multiple time throughout the day. Shoveling, winching, pulling on skis etc. The caribou have really moved into the area and there are still a lot of moose moving about.

Managed to pick up my first wolf in a leg hold(No BS), big lynx and my first ever fox! Found almost all my traps and reset most of them. Had a number of wolverine and fox footholds that had been tripped and a fox ate an ermine that got caught in a marten set.

Wolf weighed 96 lbs and lynx was 34 lbs.

You got more than a lucky streak going on. You're entering the experience/talent zone! Good job! Plus a good dose of persistence!

Things have certainly come together this season! I have listened to everything every trapper has told me, read a ton on here and followed everyone’s post, even got some 1 on 1 time with HFT AK on his line showing me how he does things. All of it has been a huge help and taught me a lot.

I for sure have persistence or maybe I just enjoy suffering?

Either you're kinda small or that wold is kinda big!! Post a pic of it when its skinned.
What kind of ruff is on that parka now? Out west they make parkas with a wolf ruff, then a strip of wolverine inside that, and then a narrow strip of beaver for next to the face. That black wolf looks to have a good coat and you got 2 wolverine to choose from!

Guess I am just average size about 5'10" 195 lbs.

Thats a coyote ruff. Man I had no idea people did multiple layers of ruff like you mentioned. Bet thats one warm hood and parka.

Had a good day out on the line today. No winching was required and only had to shovel twice while extended my trail in an off camber spot.

Even managed to catch my first fox in an actual fox set and picked up my first marten for this area. The wolf and wolverine managed to outsmart me though. Put some new sets out for them so fingers crossed they return. [Linked Image]

Got out on the line yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to see the temp rising as I got closer to the trailhead. Went from -2 in Anchorage to 22! Plus the sun was out for the first time since Nov, woohoo no flat light.

Picked up a nice fox and marten. Had some close calls and a miss with a wolverine. They will be back though.

Wolves haven’t been back through in some time. Moose have really thinned out but there are a few still hanging out and a few caribou as well.

Still trying to figure out the coyotes. They seem to hangout in a couple different locations but won’t come into my sets. Or when they do come I to my sets it’s a wolf pee post and their feet aren’t large enough to hit the pan.

Stacking up the fur smile Eventually one of those yotes will hit your gear especially with you using Lennons lures. A buddy of mine was told that where a wolverine travels there is normally a yote in trail trying to get scraps. Hopefully one will bump your gear smile

That bit about the yotes following the wolverine makes sense on my line. At the very end of my line those two overlap quite a bit. I put a set out just for the coyote this last trip. Made a big snow mound out in the open where one had been hanging out and buried a chunk of smelly meat under the top with a #3 above it.

If I aint mistaken one of white17s favorite sets in digging a hole in your trail dropping a smelly bait down it, place trap ang cover with wax paper then snow deep enough to drive over. The fox digs for the bait an gets caught.

Martentrapper he is all skinned out. 62” from nose to base of tail. Had a chunk of scar tissue right between the eyes and a broken off canine tooth. Little fat but plenty of muscle.

Struck out on the line this last check. Plenty of wolverine, fox and coyote running around. The wolves even came back through but went through a section of the line they had not travelled so there was no gear in place for them.

The wolverines are onto my tricks and just checking my sets out but not committing to them. On a good note I had wolverine visit both sites I caught the other wolverine at so those must be good locations for future use.

Saw this recent landslide. [Linked Image]

I've always considered this a good thing....that is as long as they are female wolverine that are acting smart! Seed for next year. Females are pregnant already and going to be denning in the not too distant future. Now those big males with big tracks, hate seeing them go by!

I honestly have no clue? I tried looking it up but they don’t list XL, 2XL, L etc for wolves like they do all other species. I do know it’s a lot bigger wolf than the other one I caught years ago.

Had a great line check despite the flat light. Got a real light wolverine and lost another in a #4 guarding a marten set. Looks like I had it by a toe. Thankfully none of the rain or warm temps hit the area I trap. [Linked Image]

Good eye! It’s missing. I had two footholds set there. Got one front foot and one rear foot. She chewed out of the front foot.

Nice you had two traps there, it woulda sucked to lose two in one day. What are you using for traps at that set?

It is incredible how much material they excavate.

I have had them trip so many foothold this season most sets now have two traps.

That set had an old Victor #3 square jaw and a Duke 650 if I remember correctly. I have 4 coiled all my #3’s and added at least two swivels.

Pretty good year so far!! Isn't it time to change things up for the gulos and use some coni's and snares?

I have both out there for them but they have no interest in them. They approach a set then walk to the side of it and off to their next destination.

Martentrapper this was set 50 feet from where I caught that last one. She stopped at it first and removed the 330. First one that’s come into a 330 in over a month. [Linked Image]

Funny how some guys have luck with a set-up and others don't.
I never had any luck with buckets or milk crates for wolverine! The open ended wood boxes
are 50/50 for me. Best luck I have had with 330's and wolverine is using natural cubbies, up against
a cut bank or tree root wad. Nothing fancy.

Chickenminer similar to how some people can’t get marten to climb trees or how boxed have to be vertical etc etc. Seems like some areas have special animals that you have to find the secret recipe for.

The first area I trapped the ermine would not climb trees or go in boxes on the ground. Had to use logs crossing creeks and natural cubbies in root wads to catch them. The current area I am trapping they keep robbing my marten baits well up in trees.

Looks like your slots are too wide to hold the traps solid.

Boco there is a wooden strip on the bottom that sits between the jaws a removable wooden dowel that does the same thing on the top. Those 330's are in there very secure.

HFT dowels were in place.

Dang that is one smart critter to get those traps out with those dowels in! Hopefully you will get him in a different set.

I have been faithfully carrying the paper bag ever since I put the white17 into action. Lol. Might need to have Ken tag along for a demo before I give it a try.

So is you line wheelchair accessible.....
sure how I dont get a banning

Bury it in a snow bank and make them dig for it...poke a small hole where the trap faces

Nope not wheelchair accessible. Maybe a wheelchair with a track system would work in the flat sections?

Now that’s an interesting idea. Have to try that out next season.

Pulled the line yesterday since it’s the end of wolverine season. Managed to go out with a bang with one last wolverine catch in this crazy set HFT told me to try. Still plenty of fresh wolverine tracks on the line to reseed it. Finally got pics of an animal at a set! Granted it is a wolverine circumventing my footholds. Lol

After bear ate the seat on my better halves sled she asked for a heated seat. Had to keep her happy and she sure likes that seat. I haven't even gotten to try it out!

You had a great season. Thank you for sharing and also for attending the Wolf School. Gotta a call yesterday saying the wolves were on the road and went through the parking lot where we did the school. Should have left that pee post set. Great meeting you and always enjoy sharing those pics and videos with like minded peaple.

My VK has a heated seat. So when it's warmer than 5 or so and the hanging brush dumps snow I got a wet behind. 0/10 recommend, but in open conditions it might be the bees knees.

Rumors of my assimilation have been greatly exaggerated.

That's an awesome wolverine set. I'll remember that one. Is there 2 traps on that wolverine? Joe Mattie had a foothold set where you put a couple coni's at the end of the animals reach after getting caught in the foothold. Brush was piled to each side of the coni. The idea was the wolverine would stick his head in a coni during his plunging to get out of the trap.
Agree with the rest, awesome season.

Three footholds. One on a front foot and one on a rear foot plus one of those is stuck in the third trap. All of them are #3 Bridgers.

The extra conis around a set are a great idea. You could do the same with snares.

That’s a great point about the snow melting on there. Wet butt for hours on end would get old quick.

That would have been something to catch a wolf in one of the sets at wolf class! Crazy how such an elusive animal will at times come around man like that.
