Okay, I'm tossing around the idea of some sort of box or chest for snare making in the field. I'm thinking a folding table/lid with a bench swager, bays that hold 2-4 spools of cable, and small cubbies for ferrules/stops/locks/swivels/etc.

I'm thinking hdo plywood but can't seem to wrap my head around how to do a hinged or slide out worktop.

Anyone done this or seen a similar idea?

The best I can come up with is something like a footlocker with a lift out tray.

Lol, build your snares at home. No need to haul around all that stuff.

Maybe something like a wood camp kitchen? The tops fold onto themselves and the sides swing in.

Build your chest with a hinged top as per usual. Make yourself a worktop of sufficient thickness for your needs and attach it in a single, thin drawer bay right below the lid.
Frame out two narrow, vertical drawer bays at the left and right side of the box - 2 drawer slides each. These will slide out to support the worktop from below but take minimal space within the chest.

Assuming this would be a use on tail gate setup

build it like a tool box

but with small parts drawer on the bottom with dividers
a hinged front that has the bench swagger mounted to it as well as a yard stick
when the front panel folds up the swagger fits into a space above the drawer to hold the drawer shut and you still have a tool tray on top to hold cutters and such stuff you might want easy access to tip lid folds down to hold front lid from opening a simple drop in peg locks them shut

now it pulls out and sets on your tail gait , the swagger is at tail gate height the drawer can't pull out too far because it runs into the swagger , the front edge is a yard stick screwed down giving you a little ledge so parts don't roll off as you set them there

when the front is folded up and the top lid comes down the front can no longer fold out so a simple latch holds it closed as you bounce down the road

put handles on the short ends

a cleat on the bottom back edge fits between the tail gate and bed so it doesn't want to slide around on you
