Few sweeps with digger on back of hammer then drill hole
I've made the holes a lot just by wobbling them out with anchor driver or stake also.

Do you use the auger to make the trench as well?

It's a set that has produced good for me. Takes advantage of the dug dirt as guiding. Let's coyote work set from the side as they have a tendency to do. And they seem quite comfortable stepping to that spot between the holes after they have checked first hole out with no bad effects. Doesn't matter which side they come from that spot seems to be the next step to check out the second hole. In my mind it's almost like they have let their guard down a bit after safely checking out first hole. So far I don't think I've ever had a trap dug in this setup. I like a good step down because I can make it anywhere with no backing, and I don't like creating backing that's not already there. This set gets less refusals than a step down and trap bed is a little more weather resistant but does require some natural backing. It's a twist of a set I saw in one of Dobbins books. Instead of one hole and two traps to cover both sides its one trap with two holes that works for an approach from either side. And holes look like a fox or coyote digging for a mouse or something. Maybe not the best set for the really cautious coyotes but a productive set for a good number of the pack. I've even lightly blended the trap bed with a light grass covering with success if you want to use less dirt and maybe make it a little more weather proof. In tight ground it can be a little challenging making the two holes and short trenches and still keep the integrity of ur trap bed so sometimes I have to angle the trenches out at a bit of angle to keep enough solid ground in between to bed trap solid. Just have play around and see what works for your situation. It is a set I don't mind using a little smaller trap in too. Two odors in separate holes is another advantage I think.
I will add I like to keep the trenches and holes as close as possible just so it's not too big of a step for the coyote to reach the second hole.

Put your set at the base of those 3 split trees put a pile of sticks on either side of the set and dig your dirt hole straight into the roots, if you don't catch him ill buy ya a beer

I often take a rerod and make a few woller holes on different sides of trap bed with very minimal different lures in each along with a sleeper trap sitting back. Make a couple different sets such as a charred stick urine post and don't think a lucky coyote is smart .

Yesterday I went back out to those two sets and got some recon on what occurred. It was raining so I didn't get to implement the double hole set Yes sir but plan on doing that today as the sun is out and no rain in the forecast. My traps weren't dug up and the coyote left no indication that it was aware of them, so that is reassuring that I had them bedded solidly. On the first set (up close trail cam pics) it looked like he missed my pan by inches and one thing I need to do is make my hole deeper as it's not as deep as I thought, which likely worked against me. The second set it worked the hole at an angle and was close to a back leg catch, but once again mere inches from the trap. I guess the Lord is trying to teach me patience with this yote. eek Thank you all for the help and I'll keep ya updated on how the double dirt hole set works. If you see anything I can improve on in these two pics, let me know please as I want to become a better trapper and want to learn how to be successful. [Linked Image]

Thank you all once again for the help...as I finally connected with my first coyote ever as a trapper! WOW! grin grin grin I'm at a loss for words besides, THANK YOU! What worked was the step down set exactly like the one Yes sir recommended. I'll get more pics uploaded later but just wanted to share with you all that I was able to finally seal the deal.

Congratulations. Looks like a good coyote location. A lot of times the remakes are even better.

OH OH Bad news. You are hooked for life now. Soon you will have more lure on hand then the dealers and a pile of traps high as your truck and still buy more.

I'm not a great cat trapper and haven't caught a lot of them and when I do target them it's mostly blind sets or blind sets with some lure on the side. And I rarely catch cats in my coyote sets. So I have never caught a cat in this set or even tried it on cats. But watching cats work sets on cameras and as little as they move their feet and as careful as they place them it wouldn't surprise me if it worked good if your into dirt holes for cats. That flat spot between the holes and back about 4 or 5 inches has surprised me how good of a spot for coyotes to step over to and check out the second hole.

I'm assuming your talking about the double dirt hole set
