Was in NM recently and had a good visit with Mr Lucero. Sounds like thanks to steeltraps and others, he is out of nighttrain---- was able to get others I have been using. His books are sold out but he is having more printed. He has been bad sick but doing better now. He showed me a couple trick sets I may use in the future. These old-timers are a wealth of information.

Thanks for sharing. He would be a good man to take instructions from.
I have a good friend from Texas that is a fine coyote man. We jaw on the phone every now and then. I get the best part of being friends as I have learned a lot
from him. Occasionally he will call with a dog question that I can help with.

He is close to Mr. Lucero and has nothing but nice things to say about him and his wife.
Once again trapper man.com has made the world a bit smaller.
Glad you met him.
Very Cool and thanks again for sharing.

Mac

I was told he may not even be making Night Train anymore. I got whatever he had and have it put away as I already have some.

Don’t know what it is about his lures, but they work. Not saying others don’t and that they’ll work everywhere because that’s how I got my first supply, they didn’t work for someone.

But they work in our area, my own Son has never stolen anything in his life except those lures out of my lure bag, lol!

I was catching so he asked if he could borrow them when he went to make some sets and started catching. Well, he was remaking sets just adding urine and still catching a few. It wasn’t until he had a set that sat for over 2 weeks through rain that finally caught…that’s when he snuck over and stole my lures!! Caught him on camera. He claimed he thought I was asleep and was just “borrowing” them…as he waited until after good and dark to sneak over.

Mr Lucero was in western KS near me in the late 70's early eighties. I didnt know him then but he was all of us younger trappers hero as he was known to really stack up the coyotes. A number of years ago I got his book and contacted him in NM. Been using his lures ever since . Sat down with him and Mrs Lucero and son Bill couple weeks ago as I was headed to AZ by way of NM. Turned out after getting into a number of topics, He use to come over to the archery club my grandfather helped found and was a part of back in the 70's. I think his missus said he is 87. So your the culprit wanna be lol Well I hope he can keep making lures or get them made as they sure work here in western KS and I have used them in N Texas with great results.

Link didn't work. So here is an old post from steeltraps.

Well i have been back from Tularosa New Mexico for a few days. Had the pleasure of taking 3 days of trapping lessons from Mr James Lucero. All i can say is WOW! I was taught some true old time wolfer ways. That is exactly what I went to him for ! We went and made sets about 3 or 4 miles from his house, on BLM land. Also went on some private land. I got to see alot of his old stomping grounds! Also learned 6-7 trap set that are NOT in any of his books! I really like the bobcat sets he showed me, they are NOT in any books of EVER be shown anywhere. Mr Lucero is also plaining to write another book. Its will be gear toward = Cattle, Sheep, and hard to catch and spooky coyotes. Mr Lucero is also going to start giving afew lessons again! He will be charging 1000 dollars for 3 days . I can tell you that it is WELL worth the money! His phone number is = 1 575 585 6314 Please keep in mind Mr Lucero is 85 years old. So speak clearly on the phone. If anyone has any questions on = Where to stay? What to bring? or anything else feel free to PM me anytime.

I mailed my order in on a piece of paper with a money order, after I called him.

He came to Illinois a couple times too. Gave good demos. Not flashy or ''trick'' sets. Just sets that work.
