Just wandering if you have bought urine and questioned its age ?

I am curious cause the stuff I have bought in the past was really amonia like, even after sprayed and dried out it still was not quite right.
Some of this stuff does not even remotely smell like the critter it came from.

I have some bladder collected urine that still smells fresh.

Just curious on your thoughts of The freshest Pee.

well you hear all the braggin bout pee and you get it it smells like that. I aint sayin names but I got some that spiked with skunk. I called the person to just let him know, not mad mind you, he acted like I slapped him in the face. I offered to send it back for him to smell. His reply was who says you did not put it in there. Whatever, I am on a quest to find the real deal. I open the jug and it smells like a cat sprayed ya in the face.

Bo Peep aint cuttin it.

I have bought red fox urine over many years, and never questioned its "age." I have some now, stored in glass containers, that is over five years old - nothing wrong with it.

Have been fortunate and never have had "bad" urine that I hear people speak about - unfiltered, poorly handled stock that smells like sewer water.

However, most of the urine that I have obtained from penned fox does have a stronger ammonia odor than that of straight bladder urine. Since I am not a licensed and certified wild mammal urologist, I do not know why that is. And, actually really do not care.

All that I do know is, is the fact that the ammonia in fox urine I do have does not interfere with its effectiveness. Every so often I just burp those urine containers and let that excess gas out. Even if used at a set with the "ammonia" odor, it won't take long for that strong odor to dissipate - gas be gone, if you will. Not a big deal that I am aware of.

Asa Lenon, Bob Jameson, Paul and several others have addressed most aspects of animal urines at considerable length over the years on this forum.

I guess you know what your nose knows to discern the relative degree of quality from your urine purchases. I really do not think the "age" of it has a direct correlation whatsoever with quality.

I know of one dealer in Ohio who backs the quality of his urines 100%. He stores his urines frozen, thaws a given amount to fill an order and ships it. I have never stored my urines in the freezer, but it is done by many trappers without any problems.

No need to freeze good urine, but it can't hurt....

dirtholeman...I have also "heard" about a certain dealer putting skunk juice in his "urine product"...lol....this same person has his urines forsale with plastic wrap over the top of the lid (and then the cap is screwed on) and then the cap is black taped.....

I had went over to the booth to smell this urine in question (I had heard from different Trap supply dealer that he felt there was monkey business going on with that individuals product) so when I got there and was going to give the smell test I found that it was almost imposible to get a smell because it had been armed with tape and plasic wrap, etc....lol....only way to find out was to buy some and I wasn't gonna buy any...lol..so never found out the truth \:\)

Dirt, I think it will work ok even with the ammonia whang to it. I figure caged animal urine has run down collection troughs "contaminated" with food particles, droppings and old urine, no matter how clean the seller keeps his operation. It will never be as pure as bladder collected urine straight from a harvested animal. But when you need urine in quantity enough for a long trapline, the bought stuff is probably good enough to work, and the ammonia part will likely dissipate after applying to the set and just leave the desired urine smell. Just my opinion, but if it works that is the bottom line...

I wouldn't doubt your local hydrant saw a few lifted legs. It has been a leaky subject in this neighborhood with a wide range of odors gathered from near and far more than once.

It's has to have the ammonia smell. What I dont want is that sewer smell that comes with alot of it. And I dont want that watered down yellow stuff either. Dirt, you get your pen built and work at it and youll see what good pee is all about.

almost got dog bit, nobody around, music blaring, truck and 4wheeler settin around, etc. What wuz he listening to? Wasn;t snoop dog again was it?

Good clean clean collected, filtered or pastuerized urine will all eventually develop an ammonia odor push in time. Some more so then others. It is a natural by product of age, diet influences and the resultant PH. Exposed to the open air the ammonia surge dissappates to a great degree but it acts to hold the primary odor essence where applied.

Ammonia is not a bad odor by any means. It is what gives the urine its robust push. Cat and Coyote urine really gets sharp with age. Cat urine especially. The ammonia odor begins to develop as soon as it hits the open air once it leaves the animals body. The recognizable odor of that specific target animal is quite evident once the ammonia push has aired.

I just filtered and pasteurized 62 gallon of red fox urine yesterday. I will go out and sponge the floating contaminates from the top this morning now that it has cooled over nite. Siphon it off and filter any remaining solid particulate and it is ready for bottling. It will last forever now in storage or in a trappers shed. Even the so called best collected urine can have impurities and lots of bacteria from food, blood, meat, fat etc. that was picked up in the collection process.

Once you have filtered as much as I have you know to take precautions to prevent breakdown and souring or to discard the urine for return to the dealer.Only a very small percentage of urine producers over the years have sent me urine not in need of working it over and filtering it.I can usually tell pretty quick by look and smell what I have when it gets here.

Skunk and fox smells are not the same. I have smelled skunk in some commerical urines. I have a free pamphlet on urine written by Russ Carman if you would like a copy send a self addressed stamped envelope to Bill Kasten,RR2 Box 2287, Hallstead,Pa. 18822 and I will get it in the mail . I try to sell the best that I can find and haven't had any complaints yet. This is by no means a commerical just wanting to give good info to my fellow trappers.

Lot of difference in urine being sold. Some is diluted with stuff like glycerine and some isn't even urine. Guys mixing up concoctions with ingrediants like phenyl acetic acid, urea, ammonia or combinations added to urine. I don't have a problem buying urine but I am choosy about who I buy from.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
