Has anyone ever built and used tapered boxes similar in shape to the marten boxes trappers use in Canada?

Would be a space saver to haul. Thanks.

I’ve used the white 4 gallon square buckets that stack. Sure would think the wooden tapered
ones would work. I liked the plastic ones due to less weight to haul around

I just caught my first raccoon in a square bucket with a 160. I target woodchucks, possums and skunks on my small property (for the past 7 years) and I was shocked to see a raccoon! This thing had to weigh 25 pounds.

I have some buckets. And made some dog proof boxes even though no worries here about dogs. Just wondering for ease of carry in the truck.

There are some. Individual's making them for sale from Mn. They were at the convention last summer. Looks like they stack together really well.

Somebody show me a picture of a "dog proof" BG boxes in the 160-220 size range please. My terriers can get in a lot of tight places when they want so I am curious to see other folks designs. ........................................ the mike

Hi Wife,
I made 2 a few years ago based on what Wisconsin requires. We don't have a dog problem here.
I will take a couple pictures tomorrow and post.

Made from scrap pieces a few years ago.
OAH is about 12 inches. The overhang out front is 9". The sides down from the top are 4-1/2".

Thanks for the pictures. Your box is a deterrent for bigger dogs but a small brittney, beagle or terrier has no problem wearing a BG from that size box,,,,,,,,,,, SO as an added preventative I assume you use an attractant like sweet candies, sugars and non meats to avoid the small guys I have my record of 35 red fox in BG's in one year (set on purpose) without a dog catch but no bait was used so my experience has been ------ knowing more about your quarry's habits, is probably better to avoid non targets than techniques. Thanks again. My take................................................. the mike

Dog proof body grip boxes are also pretty much coon proof.

I do catch coons is these. We have no regs regarding dog proof boxes. Just had scrap lumber and thought this might be a good idea to try along with my buckets.

I can see where small dogs may want to stick their head back into any box.

I looked these up. Pretty cool. Have you used the 220 model to catch coon?

May God bless you and yours

IMO buckets and boxes are low on the list of raccoon trapping methods. There are so many better and more effective ways to catch coons. I've done it but it's not the greatest set IMO....

This is much more typical...

I think that when using coon boxes your tying to force that critter to get down on It's belly to get In the box. And I think that's a problem. I had better luck by raising the mouth of the box up at a 45 deg angle. But for the most part I don't use any type of box.

The overhang requirements for "dogproof" boxes are about as effective as a no dogs allowed sign.

I know you can't see much from these pics, but this is all I can dig up. I made a dozen of these coon boxes back about 8 or 10 years ago when NC went through some body grip trap legislation. They were "dog proof" and were restricted on the opening size. I used 160 BMI's in them and caught a bunch of coon. Not nearly as efficient as other methods, and definitely not a preferred way to catch them, but an idea nonetheless

Can see them in the background of this pic
