I think your boss is correct. since the beaver is carring the stick in its mouth and the is the end that goes through the trap fist, then tripping the trap is a result of transporting the stick. An act of nature on a deliberate act.

I'm no pro like some on here but they do. I reall don't know if it is intensional or not. Think it is mostly that trappers disturd dams, runs ect and in the procces of repair they push sticks and debris into them?
Good question?
I'd really like to here from the Boss, J or some of the other fine beavermasters on here.

It's only blind beavers that do that charles. lol
Beavers are builder's so it's normal for them to be hauling around sticks with them to repair a dam, eat, make bedding, etc. and accidentally fire off a trap with them.
I don't think they use them to find traps with though BUT I do think they use turtles as mine sweepers if you set any 330s out this time of year, lol.

Think your giving animals more credit than they deserve in the mental capacity department Charles!
To date ive never seen any animal that knew a trap was a trap! Granted some beaver know a 330 is something dangerous, but I doubt they have a clue it's a trap.

I can see the WB's movie now. Buster the Beaver running around with sticks poking all them baaad ol twaps of Elmers. LOL Seriously, Beaver carry sticks, sticks are usually infront of the Beaver when carried, stick get to trap first. Charles I don't think Beaver have enough brain matter to knowingly, on purpose, stick a stick (pardon the pun) in a trap. I think your boss was using a play on words with you to probably win a bet or something. Is that what he did? LOL All of this is just my humble opinion.

I can't say that I've every known a situation where a beaver threw a 330 with a stick on purpose. I have known them to throw 330s though. I watched one do it, not once, but twice. The beaver approached the submerged body grip and right when it got to the trap, it did a forward summersault and it hit the trap with it's tail. I would have thought that the beaver recognized that it was a trap when it got close and turned quickly and accidentally fired the trap..... except I reset the trap and watched the beaver do it a second time. This was about ten feet from where a ditch emptied into a pond. The beaver would swim around the mouth of the ditch until I got done setting and then I backed off.... then it would come in and do its trick. I had Backbreaker behind the trap and I reckon that beaver wanted to get to it. If I'd have not approached the trap immediately after it fired it, I don't know if it would have gone past the fired trap to get to the lure. I pulled that trap because I was sure it would have been a waste of time leaving it. A CDR at a fake castor mound where the ditch entered the pond took care of this beaver.

see...now where getting somewhere!
so, if a coyote can dig a trap when he knows its there, why does the beaver have to be so much less intellegent than the coyote?
dont tell me the coyotes are just smarter than beaver either!

I am no pro but I have caught lots of beavers and rats. I have never seen beaver work a connibear and throw it but. I have watched their patterns once they become trap wise. There is no question that beaver sometimes become aware of traps being a threat in their living area. I like most trappers have had success in areas where beaver have become trap wise using snares. The beaver are still there but they are NOT SWIMMING THROUGH A BODY GRIPPER. That doesnt mean that one will not slip up and do it but once they become wise to the trap their instinct is very keem I also feel that they intetionally fire traps by using sticks and mud. I have not seen it but my experience tells me that mature beaver are not only protecting themselves but their young as well. I will go a step farther and here some fellow trappers will really think I am stepping out on a limb but I belive that hard trapping pressure will make muskrats wise as well. Not nearly as wise as beavers, but we make a mistake when we underestimate the animals we pursue. Good luck.

OK, beaver pros,
my boss says he dont believe a beaver will use a stick to fire off traps, as i was telling him they do, ive had it happen
pics would be awesome. Yes Charles beaver will seek out and destroy traps using "weapons of opportunity" (sticks). Once a trap is located by the forward or recon element of the colony, they send out the signal to the rest of the colony. This signal is a high pitched squeal that cannot be heard by the human ear, but can be heard by every beaver in a 2 mile radious. The beaver then pinpoint the source of the signal within + or - 2 feet. They converge on this spot where they get an intel dump from the recon element. Once the brief is complete the security element will punch out and set up blocking positions at likely avenues of aproach. The recon element remains behind with HQ, and the assult element makes its move on the objective (the trap). This 3 beaver element usually has a primary and secondary breacher, both of wich are carrying sticks, the third is just there for moral support. With one swift, precision movement the primary jams the stick into the trap setting it off and forever keeping the colony safe. I hope this helps.

Most beaver i encounter that are scared of 330's are scared of ANYTHING out of the ordinary that wasn't there the night before be it a single stick sticking up, a snare, whatever! Anything above water they can see, why I own large footholds.

I have watched beaver throw body grippers with sticks and debris.
Going back up to Paul's post about beavers tail slapping a body gripper, I have a little experience with that also. However, I have tail snared numbers of beaver. Tails slapping is not the only reason this occurs, but I believe it is the most frequent cause.
And, Yes, I have watched a beaver tail slap a snare, and catch himself.
Later, 45/70,

i'm sorry but i just can't give that much credit to a beaver, a rodent with a brain the size of a walnut imo, is not going to think "i bet if i hit these two little metal sticks with this soft chewy stick that i can make this 'trap' close and it won't be able to hurt me or my kids and we can swim around all we want".
now get accustomed to seeing a square object that "the last time i got close to one of these things it almost bit me", yeah i can believe that.
you folks that have had "square" 330 conni shy beaver ever tried a RBG and see what happens??
i set a square one in a den entrance and that beaver didnt go near her den for three days, i put a RBG in place of the square one and i caught her two nights later. I had a family of beaver that I trapped this season I caught the kits and a couple of 1-2 year old beaver but mom and dad avoided the 330's set in runs and crossovers like the plague. I set 2 660's further back from the runs and and caught the adults in two nights one after the other. I definitely believe changing the shape or outline is what caught those beaver.
A little bit of pain never hurt anyone.

I have watched beavers take sticks and try and throw traps with them and if the traps dont throw they will take the trap by the hole at the end of the springs on a 330 and carry it up on their hut and pitch it off the hut to make the trap fire when it hits so him and his buddys wont get caught in it. Hows this for your boss charles. Its the biggest tale I could think of for the moment.
