I've never sold any furs yet. When selling green beaver, do they buy them rolled up and still frozen? How do they check size and quality? Groeny wants beaver frozen, laid out straight, folded. To me, it can only be a guess as to size and quality. It would be very hard to determine bites and cuts.

Groenewold is buying the pelt for the underfur for the hatter market. They are not concerned about bites and cuts in the leather. And as many thousands as they handle, they sort them by size by feel in 3 or 4 piles. They want the frozen so they can get them to their plant in IL without spoilage and do not have to use refrigerated trucks.
Some of these factors are more important at some times and in some states more than others. For example, their southern runs like NC, SC, GA are later in the spring, late March or early April and it might be 80 degrees daytime temps so they definitely need frozen.
Bottom line, they have developed a system that works for them and apparently works for lots of trappers as well! Nobody is forced to sell to them.

I have seen them at the GFW truck folded along the spine and then folded again nose to tail. Along the spine is preferred according to their pelt handling advice but they will take them double folded too. Double folding probably makes it harder for them to size so some may go in a smaller pile but they will still buy them that way.

His prices are too low ! 25 ish for fisher, 7 on fox, 16.67 on beaver, and $ 10 on castor. Somebody is making an awful lot of money profit. From now on I'll put up my beaver and sell at Ballston or Herkimer.
I sold to GFW last weekend in NY. You will not get any more for your Beaver at Either of those places in my opinion. You will also know what you're check is going to be before you leave home. At current per pound prices for put up beaver, the smallest Beaver weighed out of close to 250 was worth over $10 with the largest being worth close to $55. The average was just under to $30. All beaver were caught within the last 4 weeks of the season.

How about if you only have a small chest freezer? They'll still buy the beaver pelts frozen rolled or folded up, but you'll lose $$ in the long run....?? size = throwed in smaller size pile.
