Never denned coyotes but I do know if I get within a quarter mile of a den with pups checking cows, even if I don't see a coyote, they will be gone the next day it seem around here. I've also seen what appeared to be at least 2 baby sitters maybe 3 with a denned pair once.

I always liked that canned ham. Brings back memories of hunting with an old guy when I was younger. He would always through a bucket of taters and couple cartons of eggs in the truck when he would leave to go hunting. We used to go for four or five days at a time and just sleep in the trucks when we got tired. For breakfast we would fire up a little camp stove on the tailgate, boil coffee and scramble some eggs, spam and fried taters. For lunch we'd have fried egg and spam sandwiches, and often times for dinner the same, with fried potatoes again.

Just playing the devils advocate but maybe he moved them there to take advantage of the available forage. His job is to turn as much forage into meat as he can and your job is to keep the sheep safe from coyotes. He hired you so he can do his job better. Besides you pride yourself on your hard work. If there's grazing available a rancher or sheep guy wants to use it.

Yes Sir. He HAS a better place 7700 acre pasture that has water and better grass. And even though empty it buts up next to other sheep. So We keep it snared. Like a buffer space To be honest. EVEN his own brother is saying = WHY did he put them their??? We really think it was the = sons choice. And his father wants to teach him a lesson ? But who knows???? Ifs rocky less grass less water worst fences BUT closer to the son? Maybe thats it ??

Yeah hard to say without being in his shoes. Maybe he's saving better place for later use and possibly because of moisture or point of lambing cycle he feels this is best time to utilize this area...??? I know the amount of forage is usually the limiting factor for most ranchers and especially so in dryer climates. Getting sheep killed to teach a son a lesson is hard on the pocket book. Maybe he's that confident in your skills. Maybe he thinks having you there full time will open up more land for use and he's planning on building an empire now. grin

Swamp Wolf I am NOT look forward to having to turn a black bear loose ! Its will happen sooner or latter. One of my past employers A rancher from New Mexico/Texas line. Is getting me a lasso ready. I need to work on = being able to = lasso aniamals ! I had to release a calf the other day. IF it had been bigger?? I would have been in trouble. SO i need to learn to rope alittle bit.

I must admit. Getting used to = West Texas ways Is not always easy for me! I am used to = running wide open. It dont work like that here. Have caught coyotes that took 30 -44 days to get in trap while setting on fresh sign. On hundreds of thousands of acres = its a long term or life time project here. Today. I work from 7 am till 2 pm. Set 3 traps. Ran bout 60 traps over 60000 acres or so. THEN at lunch. Took a nap. Now bout 5 pm will go to a spot. And set bout 3 more traps on other side of ranch. Going from = numbers. To = predator control man has been a adjustment here for me NO MORE nosebleeds. Knees dont hurt before rainstorms and back feels 100% better !!!! Really enjoying West Texas !
