With the heat picking up and coyotes being denned up ,what changes do you make ( if you do ) when setting traps in the summer such as bait, lure or anything else. I would be glad to here any tips you could give on this.

Good bait/lure/urine will still be good in the summer. May use smaller quantities as the coyotes like to roll a lot more this time of year. It is my anecdotal experience that they will work less hard to get something out of a hole, but will spend lots of time if it’s above ground. Half of that time may be spent rolling, however. I’d say for actually trapping this time of year you need to be on location more so than the fall/winter. They seem to move less and a lot of my areas go dead

Only issue with baits and even lures during summer that we deal with are ants. Lure is used in very very tiny amounts. Bait for dirtholes is an egg. Just a plain ole egg, store bought or straight from the coop, it doesn’t matter. You’ll wade through coons and possums, but we do catch coyotes on them. Basically everything out there eats eggs…except ants, lol. If you don’t have ants, disregard this and don’t share our secret, lol.

Flat Sets. NO Bait becuase of ants. Skunky will work if in small amounts Use urine as much as lure when its hot. Good urine is a great thing ! Ever summer its the same lures for me Coyotero works well. Winter Wolf does too. JL# 1 catches lots of bobcats and attracts to many cows IF IN cow country I dont use it Got some 2015 coyote gland lure from a West Texas trapper that is well known. Its working well. Be on location is a must. Look for water IF you dont have it. IF you know how to locate coyotes with a howl or siren do it. DONT over do it Set heavy when you see lots of sign.

You don’t have ants up there?

We’ve got a healthy plenty. I use mostly lures for summer camera testing and it seems to keep them at bay. Although I did find a steady trail going into some of the holes last year.

I can’t even hardly put lure out. If I do it has to be in the evenings. By mornings check the ants have still covered it. Even a longer stick or Qtip barely dipped has a dirt mound up it. Figure evenings give me my best shot at a catch.

Went out today to do some scouting for the upcoming weekend and ran across several scratch backs fresh and old in about a 5 to 8ft. radius .I see them regular but not like this. I am going to set this up with a flat set and some lure and urine . There is room for another set, what would be a good one to put in .There was several sets of tracks on the road also.

We have to trap year round and use both lure, bait and whole chickens. I use Amdro ant bait for both footholds and cage traps.

The ant bait you use no problem with refusals ?

No. As I am driving my Mule, I shake it out along the way and around the set. I have been using it for years.

What color is it. I had some stuff that was like dust, but white and stood out.

Thanks…gonna have to try that out. Eggs seem to be working ok for now. Found a supplier that has too many than he knows what to do with. Got about 6 dozen still in cartons right now.

WB the eggs you are using are they room temp or you keep them in the fridge and then use them. I am sure that would be a mess if one busted and was rotten. Do you ad any urine to the set or lure.

I also leave a bunch of brush piles, everywhere and use the Amdro ant bait all the way around them. It really helps the small game as those fire ants are very hard on anything that lays a nest on the ground. I keep them inside but not in the fridge. I keep a couple dozen in the truck as well. This guy just loaded me up with ones that didn’t hatch in the incubator. I’m on one property now and my son is on another. You will quickly find out how many coons and possums you have, lol. Wade through those to get to the coyotes. Right now we are not seeing a lot of coyote sign. Not sure if it’s due to denning or they just have been taken out t on these properties. The ones that do pass through can’t seem to pass up an egg though. I told the guy not to wash them or anything. Straight from chickens butt to a dirt hole.

Any issues with crows using eggs? I know those black noisemakers love eggs.

Negative on the crows. I drill a hole, but not too deep. I want them to see it, but by that time they’re all over the set.
Now you will catch every critter out there with eggs…coyotes, fox, bobcats, possums, and coons. I’d bet skunks too, but we don’t have any. So it’s whoever gets there first gets caught. Having a possum in a set on camera and a coyote comes by really sucks, lol!

Another issue is after a couple of catches I moved the trap outside the circle. Well, apparently the old hole still had an egg or serious egg smell and they came in and dug that up but ignored the set. Next time I’ll just reset the best I can and just add another set.

I’ll add my two cents. I will apologize ahead of time that my thoughts are random and do not run in a straight light.
For the most part I do the same things in summer as winter. It’s warm most of the year and there are ants most of the year. I use both dirt holes and flat sets year round. More flats than dirt holes all seasons. The ratio of dirt holes goes up in winter, but is still dominated by flat sets.
I use two and sometimes three smells at a set. In summer every set has something territorial regardless of set type. Gland or urine.
I still use bait in summer. Even though it’s covered by ant dirt it is still there for a few days. I am confident that it can be detected by a coyote. My jobs are ten to fourteen days. I do rebait, and depending on what I used for bait depends on when I rebait. Anywhere from three two seven days. If my bait has bones I could probably get away with not rebating but I still do it usually.My lure goes on some thing porous so when it gets covered the smell is still where I put it.
I leave my sets alone unless the ants change the landscape enough to change my intended foot placement.
Trapping around cattle is usually aggravating. If you can get outside of them great, but that is not always possible for me because I trap smaller tracts of land. If I see sign I set it. If my traps are tripped ten day in a row I reset ten days in a row. The extra work pays off more often that not.
Late summer when pups are traveling with the folks I will introduce curiosity lures in to my sets.
