I realized long ago that I can and will to the utmost of my ability. There have been four times I was about to cross that line but fortunately saner heads prevailed at the last moment.

That's not a statement of badassery but just a statement of I will not freely give up my life or the life of a loved one.

And I will not apologize for that.

And, yes, all four were stupid events better avoided.
