I wonder if you could tell a Norway rat from a squirrel, if they were cooked the same way?

Norway rats, Rattus norvegicus, are the most common rat species in the US. Most people just call them rats or sewer rats. They are probably originally from Asia, not Norway. They traveled all around the world on ships.

The other nonnative rat we have are Black rats. They are less common.

I thought a Norway rat was a larger rat and was black. As a kid, I would shoot rats in our stables when all the water was frozen. I remember one large black rat. Granddad said it was a Norway rat. All the other rats were brown. I was only allowed to use 22 shot. Most were killed in peanut hey, often at a range of inches rather than feet. I could hear them eating a peanut and see the hey moving. I put the muzzle on the spot and waited to see the rat. Bam

My thoughts exactly. I was day dreaming of fried squirrel on a plate with biscuits and gravy.

And to slide off track again....head shot squirrels with a flintlock rifle is not an easy feat. Well done!

I'd bet that most rats have a better diet than squirrels.
Lots of good grains and feed in barns, elevators, and other places that humans feed livestock.

Maybe in the woods but having watched squirrels in and around the cities and watching them rummage around in garage cans I have my doubts about diet and habits

My dad always referred to squirrels as rats with good suits

Now dad might have been biased he once told me his company had trapped and eaten rats on the islands when fighting the Japanese during WW2 and their supply lines had been cut and food ran out
